Jees, i think that’s a bit harsh! "Completely inadequate and completely hopeless". I beg to differ and I’m sure there are a number of members who will agree with me. I can't see in you profile if you've ever owned an E60 SMG but I will tell you this, in P500 S doing what this car does best, driving fast, the gearbox is phenomenal! Not to mention Launch Control which delivers some of the best starts I’ve ever experienced (manual boxes included)! Sure traffic/daily commute takes a bit of getting used to but that’s exactly why the box has so many different settings. As a GT, on long road trips, this gearbox and the whole car comes to life. This car puts a smile on my face EVERYDAY I get in it! I say thanks BMW for making a Jekyll when I want it and a Hyde on other days.
I look forward to the new box (and engine) with great anticipation.
Hi Gents, as the saying goes "different stroke for different folks" and as one famous presenter in uk once said there as never been a bad //m5, so i am sure BMW //m will pull it off again. So patience.
I don't know about all of you but I am very happy with my ///M... its a perfect all around vehicle that is really hard to replace. I doubt the turbo used in the F10 will be as obvious and as the one in our 135i. Looking forward to the new vehicle that will amaze me more than ever... however I am not buying first .

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Personally I would like to have seen the 5.5L V10 from the M5 'CSL' in this car, but I'm sure the V8 will be an amazing engine.
All that matters is that the next M5 will have DCT and that heinous gearbox will be consigned to the scrap heap where it always, always belonged.
SMG was always, and always will be, a fundamentally flawed and completely unacceptable piece of technology; no excuses can be made for its shortcomings. BMW attempted to pass it off as cutting edge to mask the fact that they couldn't offer the public a solution that was up to scratch. Completely inadequate and completely hopeless.
Doesn't matter anymore. It's gone and we will never see it in another BMW ever again. Anybody who proffers otherwise is a fool.
On a happier note, it seems that BMW has finally embraced satisfactory brakes. 6 piston callipers on the front by the look of it, and, if I am not mistaken, carbon ceramic rotors. 2 or 4 pistons on the rear.
Wow. I think this is way over the top hyperbole at best. Seeing how even the new Lexus super car with a boat load of technology is going with a hydrolically controlled single clutch, as many other super cars still do (Yes, different set-ups, but same concept). You sounded just like me, until I owned one and took the time to learn it. My guess is you've had limited exposure to the SMG at best? Just shove it over into D for cruising, and it feels like most other Auto drive system. Max it out in S and go to paddles for performance numbers beyond your personal abilities with a stick, sweetly massaging the V10. Sure, certain things could have been improved, but not the bucket of crap you describe by any stretch.
I will give the new DCT a chance, but have NEVER been disappointed in my SMG.

Couldn't agree more!
So, I guess the leaked info a little while back about the new M5/M6 having a TT V-10 and the base 5/6 models having the TT V-8 are bogus. Bummer. While I'm sure the new TT V-8 will be quick, I was looking forward to a TT V-10 to leave no question about power/torque.
I'm looking forward to trying the new model. I really disliked the SMG for real world driving. I was looking for any excuse to sell my E60 M5 sooner than any new car I've had.

If by "cruising" you mean "everyday driving," then we MUST be driving different cars. The power interruption during shifts that aren't during full-throttle and beyond 7k RPM is just horribly annoying. Yes, you can make it "better" with practice, but it is not a great system, and certainly NOTHING like an automatic produced in the last several decades much less the autos found in even a base 3-series (which is quite good, IMO).
I am so glad that Bangle and SMG are both gone. Active aerodynamics are going to be interesting to see how well they work in extreme cold. 500 ft/lb's is insane torque.
