Congrats BMW, on turning what was once an enthusiast dream car into a prissy status symbol.

I agree. Interesting that the guy says they were 'forced' to use an engine more low end grunt and that they will try to match the throttle response of an NA engine. I haven't driven a turbo charged car that I've liked yet (including a 335i). No high revving V10 thrills. Sucks. Oh well, maybe the whole package will be compelling.

This is why I leased my next M5 for 3 years. I may buy it out.. who knows but I will have a year to test drive the F10 M5 and see if it's worth giving up the 2010 Individual M5 for.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Personally I would like to have seen the 5.5L V10 from the M5 'CSL' in this car, but I'm sure the V8 will be an amazing engine.

All that matters is that the next M5 will have DCT and that heinous gearbox will be consigned to the scrap heap where it always, always belonged.

SMG was always, and always will be, a fundamentally flawed and completely unacceptable piece of technology; no excuses can be made for its shortcomings. BMW attempted to pass it off as cutting edge to mask the fact that they couldn't offer the public a solution that was up to scratch. Completely inadequate and completely hopeless.

Doesn't matter anymore. It's gone and we will never see it in another BMW ever again. Anybody who proffers otherwise is a fool.

On a happier note, it seems that BMW has finally embraced satisfactory brakes. 6 piston callipers on the front by the look of it, and, if I am not mistaken, carbon ceramic rotors. 2 or 4 pistons on the rear.

Jees, i think that’s a bit harsh! "Completely inadequate and completely hopeless". I beg to differ and I’m sure there are a number of members who will agree with me. I can't see in you profile if you've ever owned an E60 SMG but I will tell you this, in P500 S doing what this car does best, driving fast, the gearbox is phenomenal! Not to mention Launch Control which delivers some of the best starts I’ve ever experienced (manual boxes included)! Sure traffic/daily commute takes a bit of getting used to but that’s exactly why the box has so many different settings. As a GT, on long road trips, this gearbox and the whole car comes to life. This car puts a smile on my face EVERYDAY I get in it! I say thanks BMW for making a Jekyll when I want it and a Hyde on other days.

I look forward to the new box (and engine) with great anticipation.

Well said. Thanks.

The M division certainly has taken on a new direction, but I will hold back judgment until we have more experience with their new products. Times are nothing if not interesting right now.

It is shocking to many of us to consider that a 6,000 lb. SUV with four wheel drive and a turbo engine is now an M machine. But by all accounts it drives with the soul of an M. It defies all logic, and it seems to defy physics too. Well, good.

At the same time, BMW has just released news about the fantastically spec'd M3 GTS, and rumors are strong that there may be an entry-level M-like model in the works too, based on the next generation 1 series. So it's a stretch to say that BMW seems to have completely lost its way.

As for the F10 ... it will be a very different machine to drive compared to the E60 - not good or bad, just different. With more horsepower and significantly more torque, placed in a vehicle that may not weigh any more than the current model, well, it's bound to be screamin' fast.

Add to that a lower center of gravity (using carbon-fiber on the roof and trunk), double wishbone front suspension, and a torque vectoring system for the rear axle, and the handling should be even more exhilarating than the E60. There's a lot to like here. I'm looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.

Okay, throw me off the board if you must, but I have to admit that I miss the low-end grunt from my V8 Mustang. I know the M has more peak torque, but I've been driving V8's for almost 30 years and I'm really used to my cars surging forward as soon as I drop the loud pedal. I don't expect that driving the TT V8 hard will really be that much different from the V10 - you'll still have to keep the revs up a little higher than you would with a large-displacement NA V8. I'm not saying that's bad, just that a few months in the M hasn't been enough for me to recalibrate my right foot and right hand (6 speed manual) to keep the revs up in the happy zone.

And let's be brutally honest - it's pretty inexcusable for the M's to get less than 20 mpg on the highway. With that much power, an overdrive gear dropping the revs down under 2K should be a no-brainer. My girlfriend's Vette easily gets 27-29 mpg on the highway with the big NA V8 and the tall 6th gear. I suspect that the ratios chosen in the current transmissions reflect that lack of low-end (sub 2K) torque and I'd be willing to bet that we'll see a much taller top gear with the TT V8. Personally, I prefer the idea that I can loaf along on the freeway getting 25+ mpg and when I want to play I just have to remember what I've tried to teach my girlfriend - Third gear is your friend!

I'm also looking forward to the DCT in the next M6. I admit that I only test drove the SMG twice, but I was .... let's just say underwhelmed. To be fair, though, I don't think the 6-speed manual is among the better transmissions I've ever driven either. As has been noted elsewhere in this forum, it's not really well matched to the power curve of the V10 and it feels a bit vague and rubbery. All in all, though, my M6 is the absolute best car I've ever driven and I can't wait for the next gen. Beast version 2.0!

So if the new 5 series will be lauched in 2010, then the 2011 date for m5 is seems ok.
