Road and Track: Spied 2011 M5: With its twin-turbo V-8 pumping out nearly 600 bhp, the all-new BMW M5 is poised to take back the title of World's Best Sports Sedan.
Why-oh why do BMW persist in using poor 'cheap' inferior brakes?? Why don't they just bite the bullet and fit 4 or 6 pot calipers from say brembo like EVERYONE else?? Even pocket rockets like fords focus, scoobys, volvo's, alfas etc etc use brmbo four pots!!!
You mean why doesn't BMW give in to marketing and pay exorbitant fees to put Brembo brakes into its cars just so some BMW owners can turn to their Benz-driving friends and gloat that their BMW has Brembos? I really wish those who critique the stock "cheap" "inferior" brakes provide at least some quantifiable data (or even cogent qualitative criticism) of why the stock system is "inferior". Having used the stock brakes on track for repeated braking from over 160 mph, I can attest that the stock brakes are excellent even for such high-stress applications as the track, and certainly more than satisfy any street use . . . unless, of course, the criterion is "BREMBO" painted on one's calipers for the sake of having "BREMBO" painted on one's caliper.

The original M5 (E24) engine was based on the engine from the M1 (which, in turn, was based on the engine from the 3.0 CSi). The next generation M5 (E28) again used a revision of its predecessor's engine. The third generation M5 (E39) had a V-8 engine based on the M62 powerplant found in the E39 540i. Not until the E60 M5 has there been an M engine truly unique to the M5 model.
But I get what you are saying - it won't merely be an engine swap from the X5M.
And yes, everything we have read at this point is speculation ... but when was the last time such insider-based and expert knowledge-based speculation was proven wrong? Was speculation wrong about the M3 with a V-8 and M-DCT? Was it wrong about an SUV as an M machine? Was it wrong about the V-10 in the E60? Or the E60 manual transmission for the U.S.?
Hey, I would love to be shown that the current speculation is wrong ... but I don't see that happening.
First gen M5 was an E28, second gen was E34. The Europe only version of the E28 M5 used the M88 version of the M1-derived motor while the US car received a catalyst version, the S38. All of these were of course inline 6s with bottom ends derived from the M30 BMW "big" six (used in E3s, E9s, E12s, E28s, E34s); however, there were significant differences in the bottom end along with a completely different cylinder head of course. Similarly the S62 V8 used in the E39 M5 is derived from the M62, but there are tons of differences between the engines all the way down to special oil pumps in the S62 that keep oil from pooling in the heads under high g-load cornering...enough differences that the S62 set an achievement not since matched for a maximum combination of torque spread vs peak power vs efficiency.
The S85 is a special and unique engine for sure. It's sad to see that it is dead after one generation.
Speaking of the next generation, I wonder what the thing will weigh? Isn't the F10 yet an even larger 5-series chassis than the E60? I can't imagine a twin-turbo V8 with all the assorted hardware, intercoolers, etc, being a lightweight either. Sigh... I'm sick of cars getting larger and heavier. Perhaps the best deal out there right now is an E90 M3 with the Dinan stroker engine. At least it's not a giant car weighing well over 4000lbs (which I can only assume the F10 M5 will be).
My next fun car is likely going to be a GT3. At least Porsche is still true to the mission.

Like I said in my previous post it's about looks and not performance or brand.
If you care about aesthetics you will agree that the stock brakes are just plain ugly! Especially the rear calipers, they are minuscule!

I couldn't care less about how the calipers look. I care about how they work. (The rotors are the most visible part anyway, and I think they look great.) This discussion proves that BMW makes the right choice by not inflating the cost of its cars by useless poseur brake kits. Those who want and value that look have many aftermarket opportunities to achieve it.

LOL, they're just as bad as BMW and MBZ. Look at what they're building, the Cayenne and Panamera. I wouldn't call that pure...
You didn't capture my whole post on Porsche where I referred to buying a GT3.

I agree, Porsche is fixing to drop a 4 cylinder into their boxster, all to improve their corporate fuel consumption specs to meet political pressure. Its getting ridiculous across the board. At least they are not compromising on their true flagships.....not yet.
I am just so discouraged across the board. How far will we be forced to compromise for the sake of being Politically Correct, not scientifically or factually, but POLITICALLY!!!

We are seeing the last of an era.
Bahhh, This was said in the 70's as well. It took a little time, but Automakers came back better and stronger then ever...well....most

True, but I think this has reached critical mass way beyond that time period. My daughter was watching something on the Disney Channel today, and they had a commercial teaching the kids how to take a power shower, to save water. Total BS. As a parent I'm more concerned with hygeine, not a stopwatch. Total indoctrination. I've never seen so much crap shoved down our throats. This has already gone so much further than I ever thought it would. Can't believe BMW, Porsche, and others are succumbing..... Et Tu Brute?
I hope you are right. However, I will hold on to my V10 as long as I can. I can imagine the size of my grandkids eyes popping open 15 years from now just seeing a V10.
