Road and Track: Spied 2011 M5: With its twin-turbo V-8 pumping out nearly 600 bhp, the all-new BMW M5 is poised to take back the title of World's Best Sports Sedan.
No doubt its a very efficient transmission, but it takes away some of the manual feeling which is still there with the SMG (like using the throttle to adjust input to next gear and make transitions really smooth). Don't like rubber band acceleration, it should be distinct and direct, hence i don't like turbos, autos or DCT for an top of the line ultimate driving machine...
AMEN BROTHA!
I too love the feel of all "6" gears kicking and the matching throttle.
Specially when WOT!
I mean because I have never actually shifted higher than than when in M mode.
I love it, flooring it, throttle match, CHIRP, 2 gear, chirp, WOT again, 3 CHIRP!!!!
I LOVE IT!! I would not be able to throttle match each gear that way unless I did the heel driving. that is just difficult to do!
I do love the "ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE"
on a diff. note, i would love for the next version of this M5 to be a N/A machine with somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 hp and about 460 tq., that would put all these STS-V to sleep.
STS nice machine, but, still a Cadillac.
I JUST CAN'T BELEIVE PEOPLE THAT ACTUALLY OWN AN M5 AND KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE HISTORY M5's ACTUALLY BELEIVE THEY WILL USE A 2ND HAND ENGINE IN THE NEXT GEN MODEL!!!!!
NEVER HAPPENED IN THE PAST AND WILL NEVER HAPPEN. IT WILL BE A NEW ENGINE UNIQUE TO M5 AND M6.
Man all these micky mouse media people saying they heard from a "source" just a steaming heap of horse crap looking for exposure, its just specualtion and no M5 will ever use a 2nd generation engine from another car. I mean for lords sake it would be ready to launch at the same time as the rest of F10 series if that was true wouldn't it!!!!!!

Well at least we all hope that is the case, but there is a fear that they will "cheap out" and go the easy route. IMO, the best way would be to continue with a V10 application. Anything less would seem to be a step in the wrong direction, even if power output increased.

I want a N/A V10 for sure. If it's not I don't care, I KNOW I will love the next GEN M5 as much as I've liked every other. I remeber all this nonsense when E60 was launched. We all hated it then but love it now. The next M5 will be the same. TT or NA it will be awsome. BMW don;t need to cheap out they are the market leader and will continue to be so, I have utter faith in my brand and I'm sure in 2 or 3 years time we will all be loving the F10

I own a M5 and I know the history very well. I don't think anyone is worried about them yanking out a MX5 or MX6 engine "as is" and putting it in a M5. However, I think everyone is worried it will simply be an updated TTV8 spin-off from that platform. We are worried it won't be what its capable of being.
"Never happeded in the past...." is of little comfort. I never thought I would see a commercial from BMW emphasizing how "green" they are becoming, instead of their "ultimate driving" experience. An M5 has one purpose. The ultimate 4 door saloon on the planet. It's supposed to set all benchmarks and make no apologies. I hope I'm wrong and BMW has not been completely taken hostage by the Green Police. I want to know their decisions were solely made to maximize their pursuit of un-compromised performance, not MPG to make current political morons content. We will see.
Sure, at this point its all speculation, we've all acknowledged that point. No one hopes its all wrong more than me.

Why-oh why do BMW persist in using poor 'cheap' inferior brakes?? Why don't they just bite the bullet and fit 4 or 6 pot calipers from say brembo like EVERYONE else?? Even pocket rockets like fords focus, scoobys, volvo's, alfas etc etc use brmbo four pots!!!
COME ON BMW get with it!!!
Jay
A big +1! Performance wise I have no complaints but god are they ugly!

Well, sort of.
The original M5 (E24) engine was based on the engine from the M1 (which, in turn, was based on the engine from the 3.0 CSi). The next generation M5 (E28) again used a revision of its predecessor's engine. The third generation M5 (E39) had a V-8 engine based on the M62 powerplant found in the E39 540i. Not until the E60 M5 has there been an M engine truly unique to the M5 model.
But I get what you are saying - it won't merely be an engine swap from the X5M.
And yes, everything we have read at this point is speculation ... but when was the last time such insider-based and expert knowledge-based speculation was proven wrong? Was speculation wrong about the M3 with a V-8 and M-DCT? Was it wrong about an SUV as an M machine? Was it wrong about the V-10 in the E60? Or the E60 manual transmission for the U.S.?
Hey, I would love to be shown that the current speculation is wrong ... but I don't see that happening.
