Road and Track: Spied 2011 M5: With its twin-turbo V-8 pumping out nearly 600 bhp, the all-new BMW M5 is poised to take back the title of World's Best Sports Sedan.
At least that is an M5 on the picture (cant be anything else judging by the brakes).
Same speculations again on the engine, nothing confirmed from BMW... And i fully agree on the fuel comments, this is a pleasure machine, not a cheap A-B transportation box!
I could live with a DCT (but prefer manual or SMG), but low rev V8 turbo with slushy sound... If they tweak it to get more power then the X5M that will most likely mean more boost and more LAG... It will need to look insanely good and have crazy performance figures for that to be an option! Why not a supercharged S85 V10?

For the longest time I thought I wouldn't like the smoothness of DCT and would much prefer the manual feel of SMG. That is until recently when I test drove an M3 with DCT. While the shifts were a bit too smooth for my liking and completely lack the brutality of S6 at WOT, the shifts are instantaneous with absolutely no loss of power/momentum between shifts, so I am starting to warm up to it. No doubt, DCT in our M5's would make them noticeably faster: analogous to going from S1 to S6. If someone could successfully put a DCT in my car for a reasonable price, I'd actually consider it.

Why-oh why do BMW persist in using poor 'cheap' inferior brakes?? Why don't they just bite the bullet and fit 4 or 6 pot calipers from say brembo like EVERYONE else?? Even pocket rockets like fords focus, scoobys, volvo's, alfas etc etc use brmbo four pots!!!
COME ON BMW get with it!!!

The Following User Says Thank You to ur20v For This Useful Post:
While the quick WOT S5/S6 SMG III shifts will be missed, the M-DCT is much better and far more advanced. I don't see any reason to get upset because BMW is ditching the SMG. In fact, I welcome this move. With all the reputable car manufacturers producing twin clutch gearboxes or moving in that direction, this is a step in the right direction for BMW.
Taking all the speculation that has been said about the upcoming M5 into account, I would be very pleased to see the following:
4.0L or less V8 TT with 600hp and 9000rpm. (similar to the new V8 found in the McLaren MP4-12C) If BMW did this, then I may just have to jump into the next M5.
No doubt its a very efficient transmission, but it takes away some of the manual feeling which is still there with the SMG (like using the throttle to adjust input to next gear and make transitions really smooth). Don't like rubber band acceleration, it should be distinct and direct, hence i don't like turbos, autos or DCT for an top of the line ultimate driving machine...
