I think with the M5 there is a good chance of it being AWD leaving the M3 as RWD speically as the engine is now widely regarded as being a torque monster TT V8.

Theres major benefits in being AWD to drive-ability and as pointed out before weight distribution hampers traction and fitting larger rear tyres isn't something BMW will consider as their green fuel saving drive will force them to use narrower tyres with less rolling resistance and the reduced frontal area giving good and real gains.

Even if the F10 M5 has (1) the exact same engine as the X5M (2) in a platform weighing 1,000+ fewer pounds and (3) more suitable gearing with a better transmission, it will be an absolute monster. I imagine however they will tweak the X5M's powerplant a bit before putting it in the M5.
