source? especially since there wont be a 2011 M5! And we already know that the current DCT from the M3 cant handle the torque of the X truck Ms....
I work for BMW and was informed from our National Rep last week. The new M5 will launch in the late summer/fall 2010 assuming everything stays on schedule.
While I doubt the M5 will be powered by anything similar, to say there can't be a high-revving turbo car is simply incorrect. Here is a description of the powertrain of the new McLaren: Behind the rear seats sits a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 600bhp, that is driven through a McLaren seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, controlled via steering-wheel mounted paddles. McLaren Automotive claims that "12C is the most efficient, most drivable high-performance sports car in the world". The engine revs to 8,500rpm; 80 per cent of the torque is available below 2,000rpm.
Sorry V10 fans, the 2011 M5 with be powered by a 4.4L Twin Turbo V8 with the same twin clutch 7 speed trans from the M3.
Agreed. Accordign to M division, it will be based on the same engine but will be unique. The X5/6 engine revs to 7K. With a few tweak here and there, hopefully this one is going to rev higher but probably less than 8000 rpm (7500-8000 range).

That is a good point. Based on what I know about the supercharger systems already in the market or being developed for the E90/92 M3, the DCT can handle up to 440 lb/ft of torque at the crank. The M engineers can beef up the second generation of DCT a bit more for M5/6 applications to handle that kind of torque. I still think we wont see torque number anywhere close to X5/6 so somewhere around 450 lb/ft.
With less weight or at least not heavier than the current model, better fuel economy, more power/torque, better technology and transmission, the F10 is going to rock.

Thanks for the info. As always, European market and other continents will get it first. This means that it will show up on the US shores by spring of 2011.

The writer of that article was allowed to take a passenger ride with BMW-test-driver -Claudia H. - aorund the 'Nordschleife´in a ready 'M5-anniversary prototyp' which FELT like 600+bhp and toke revs to 9.000 rpm. Claudia H. did not reply to questions asked about the gearbox ???

My prediction: TTV8, 600 SAE hp, 8000 rpm redline, 450 lb/ft torque. Lower torque than X5/6 so the DCT can handle it. I could live with that but will miss the V10 for sure.
+1 in latest video on a n-ring it sounds like a v8
