Engine rumours??

It appears that everyone thinks that the F10 M5 will have the 4.4 twin turbo V8 from the the X5M. But when the M5 comes out in 2011, that engine will be 2 years old. Will BMW really put "old" engine in there flagship model??

I personally think the X5M engine will be heavily reworked or a different engine altogether,

I just listened to the BimmerCast#6 podcast from the well-connected boys on BimmerFile.com. They comment (about 13 minutes into the podcast) on the recent 'Ring video of the F10 M5 mule and they concur that you can hear the whine of turbos - and that it sounds familiar (as in the X5M and X6M). But they mention that their insiders have suggested the next M5 engine will have slightly less horsepower than expected, with a higher red-line and less torque. (I read into these comments that they mean as compared to the SUV M engine).

So, yes, re-worked. But it sounds like it will be re-worked to be more appropriate for an M5 sedan.

Another interesting comment they make is about the way the M5 mule corners in the video ... fast, but without any tail-out shenanigans. To them, this confirms something else they have heard - the application of the Dynamic Performance Control system (like the torque vectoring system used in the X6M).

Hmmmm. This is getting even more interesting.

re

"confirms" is a bit conclusive, dont you think? I watched the video and believe the car in the video may very well be a 550i twin turbo with x drive. The car is not loud enough for an m class car, body roll is a bit too extreme and the tranny sounds like an automatic. So IMHO the fact that the rear stays hunkered down could mean its x drive or not being driven to extremes for test purposes. It does appear there is a big brake kit on the car but the test vehicle seems too quiet. It makes perfect economic sense to use the x5m engine but i think the m5 variation will be very different.

:)

I knew beemer would be so smart. Higher reving, lower torque... all sounds soooo correct. People doubt BMW as if they will disappoint us with the M, but these Engineers know there ****. Also I think the test model, dosnt have the exhaust kit like the finish model would, or maybe they pack the exhaust, who noes they do a lot to give out as little info as possible.

I'd bet anyone its going to be the SAME engine maybe with few extra ponnies.

Ml63 was first with 6.3 amg engine and now its the same engine in every 63 model. BMW will do the same. m5/m6 will have same engine.

Hi.
My personnal guess would be 10/15 hp more than the twins X5/6M and less torque with higher redline.

I would be very surprised if next M5 had less than the 555hp the twins have. And M5 has always been more powerfull than the top V12 powered 7 serie. 760li is 544 hp.

So my very own guess for the next M5 is 570hp. I may be wrong. Time will tell

And the gearbox would also be a different story. 8-gears?

also, it should be lighter if they live accordign to the efficient dynamics mantra.

BMW folks of course will not talk (at this point) about the engine in the next gen M5/M6. However...when I mentioned to a BMW-M person in Garching last week that the Board members generally feel that the TT V-8 in the X5M/X6M is a "truck motor" there was great surprise that many of us were of that impression. I also offered up that the V-10 made the current M5/M6 special in the minds of Board members. She offered up that unless you have driven an X5M or X6m you should not jump to conclusions about the engine.

So, my guess (not any inside BMW info), is that a TT V-8 of some sort will be in the F-10/F-11/F-12/F13 M cars. Yes, the F-11 was confirmed as the body for the touring/wagon car, but not that there would or would not be an M version of the F-11. The F-13 guess is mine alone for what I think will be a hard top convertible of the coupe (F-12).

The general feeling was given that an M engine will always be special. So I say it won't be just an sDrive50 (assuming the F-10 550 gets that engine from the current X6) in the M cars. The M version engines of the X5M/X6M seem the logical starting point for the F-10/F-12 M5/M6 cars. Just my personal guess. But probably tuned for sedan/coupe/cabrio as opposed to SAV needs.

BMW-M needs about a year from the end of development of the series (non-M) cars to fully sort out the new M cars (BMW-M did confirm this in general terms), so they won't be seen for a while after the new 5er and 6er are announced.

A black, partially camouflaged, M5 was parked at BMW-M in Garching last week when I was there. While we were not allowed to take photos of it, it was clearly called out to us (Gustav and me) as an M5 mule. So, the photos most of us have seen is of an M5 mule, not a 550 mule. They are probably far too close to series production/announcement for a 550 mule to still be running around the Ring. But it is about the right time in the development life cycle for the next M5.

I wish we had found time to look at the M5 mule when we arrived as it was gone (out on the road) when we left the M Studio. So we did not get a close look at it.
