I am greatly looking forward to the next generation M5. I am a little disappointed the M5 will no longer have a high revving NA motor, but I like the sound of boost from twin turbos. The thought of getting a Dinan chip and instantly bumping hp and torque significantly (50+ hp?)sounds awesome, especially when a stock M5 turbo will probably be making close to 600hp from the factory.
M is no compromise and just plain simple "MORE" ... looking at what they accomplished with X5 - X6 I have no doubt they will hit a homerun with the next one. Remember the e60 was not a welcome addition to the line especially with its controversial SMG - I know they have learnt from that experience and the next one will be ready to rock!

As far as finance and our current economy, I think the M Division will cut back production before they design a underperformed vehicle.
For example, there would be a waiting list and so many vehicles made. If demand rises, then they will produce more.
I honestly cant see BMW building something short of excellent when it comes to the M Division.
Time will tell.. hopeing for the best.
With your statement you saying BMW short changed the X5M and X6M motor wise because you consider their engines too inferior to be put in the M5/6.
I think what is going to make the cars stand apart is a technology such as the addition of a electric motor or the rumoured KERS. Then we going to have to find tuners and electricians hehe.
The motor in the new X5 M (and X6 M) is a gem. No matter what you think- is this selling out with a SAV? - I think the X5 M is very well executed and I think if this twin turbo V8 were to be put in a sedan- which would be a logical thing for them to do- it would make the next M5 quite a monster and I think with a fast shifting automatic or DKG the car will be much more than what the E60 was. I have no idea on the timing but I think they would be smart to get the car out sooner than in the past because MB AMG and Audi RS and now Lexus and Caddy are increasing their challenge. My wild, no secret info known, guess is the F10 M5 comes out one model year after the initial F10- so call it a 2011 model year car that hits the market in Sept 2010.

21 months between the last E-60 M5 and the first F-10 M5. That's a long time to not have any M5s to sell, but its completely likely. If BMW is smart, they will work hard to reduce that to Spring 2011 rather than Sept 2011.
