I think the new one needs to break the 4.0 mark, 3.8 for a low, and 4.2's for high. It needs to set a new benchmark like all new M5's have in the past.

3.8 is certainly possible.... vimulator estimates 0-60 in 3.97 seconds with tire friction at 1.2 while setting it to 1.25 gives 0-60 in 3.8, unlimited traction gives 0-60 in 3.07... ofcouse center of gravity, wheel base and suspension plays a role in available traction too. 4 seconds is probably real world performance for most, while 3.8 would probably be doable on a sticky drag strip.

I think if it was 4.0, that would still be a benchmark. I think the fastest 0-60 for a sedan in the M5s class is 4.1 for the Mercedes W211 E63. These are factory tested 0-60 times I'm talking about.

I don't know about factory numbers... different test methods. Traction starts to become a determining factor when you drop under 10 pounds per horse power. Given enough traction the current M5 could do 0-60 in an estimated 3.66 seconds stock, without any clutch dropping. BMW seems to post customer attainable numbers, while Merc might post the maximum performance they could achieve. Either method is ok, but they should both disclose the test method.
