Slightly OT here, but given the teething pains of the E39 M5 here (some clutches, VANO's etc) and the mid cyle upgrade in 2001, and the more serious SMG issues and the RCOD in 06 and somewhat in 07 (and interior refresh for 09 including the much "discussed" original idrive with the new and improved version), how many people are seriously going to consider the first year F series M5 EVEN IF THEY LIKE HOW IT LOOKS AND LIKE THE POWERTRAIN?
I can tell you that at $100k ish (hoping no price increase?), I will not be a beta tester for the third go round. I will wait until BMW PROVES their latest is not as problematic as their recent iterations and see how their resale holds up.
Put me down for one (maybe) not before '14 or '15!
Regards,
Jerry
Anyone else think the new 5 series (and therefore the M5) will most likely have a close resemblance to the new 5 series GT hatchback?
The front of that has an altogether less sleek more aggressive look, I am told this is because of pedestrian protection legislation.
I prefer my E60 and will stick with it.
Taking the 5GT theme a step further it looks like BMW may have given up on aluminium for bodywork, the new car is all steel. It has alloy suspension but not bodywork.
Taking another hint, which may be totally wrong - the new 740d has a 3 litre diesel with 306 bhp. A 6 litre V8 might have close to 600bhp. The limited rev range could be offset by using the 7 series 8 speed box.
For those of you who haven't seen the thread, here is the thread on a test of the new X6M. It's 5200+lbs and has only 550hp and 500tq and does 0-60 in 4.3. Imagine that on a car with 1000 less lbs and probably even more hp/tq. I can't wait!
