Next M5

Recent articles indicate that the next M5 will share the twin-turbo version of the V8 that will be in the X6 and other cars (perhaps with tweaking and 500+ bhp). The V10 will no longer be used. The new engine will use Efficient Dynamics (or some similar name) to also achieve better gas mileage. Admirable.

The current BMW Roundel magazine calls the Dinan S3-M5, the best vehicle the driver had ever driven, but it comes at a price of $75k over and above the cost of the vehicle. If this is realistic, then the G-Power vehicle, may be the best deal around. On the other hand, is there realistically anyone working on a single or twin supercharger or turbo for the M5?

The Dinan S3-M5 does appear to be spectacular, but it also seems to me that it is coming so very late in the life of the e60 (probably one more year) that limited cost recovery will occur upon a resale.

Last time I read about the F10 M5 it was said that it will be a V10 550 hp NA.

I really do hope for the NA V10, I just LOVE the sound with all my heart.

One article, in that same magazine said "even though the V10 won vehicle engine of the year for several successive years...the V8 twin turbo...would be used." This is in the current BMW Roundel Magazine, a pretty authoritative (but not definitive) source.

I don't believe anything, all speculations... .

But if this V8tt based on X6 will also be used in F10 550i, it's unaccpeptable for 550 to share the same engine with F10 M5/M6.

Until I see the F10 M5/M6 in the dealer...all just .. ..

Are you kidding me. BMW is not AMG here, they dont take engines from their other cars and just change the software or stick a turbo or supercharger on it.

NO WAY IN HELL BMW uses the 4.4L TT V8. And the fact that they want to make efficient dynamics a priority on this car is laughable. This is an ///M if you want gas milage go get a prius!!

QFT... It would be unusual for BMW not to have an engine unique to the M5.

However, I can't imagine this generation of M5 is at all profitable. I'm willing to bet the warranty and buy-back costs consumed all of the profit on this vehicle and when you consider the R&D costs and the hit on lease residuals, this is just not sustainable. They may make up for this with the new M3 but BMW may have no choice given the current economic climate except to follow in AMG's footsteps and add a bit more boost to an otherwise stock turbo motor this time around.

You might want to read up on the M5's history starting in 1985. There were 3 models before the E60 M5. The E24 M5, E34 M5, and E39 M5.

The E24 used a modified M1 engine, but others used modified versions of standard 5 series BMWs engines. They were all very special engines, but shared major components. Be careful with speculation, because whatever the M division does do will be very special.....
