Discussing the New M5 & Generations before

Hi everyone

This thread really is not a post for a discussion rather it more be a personal view on M GmbH (LTD) in aspect of the new F10 coming out & what motorization it will or will not have.

Since I´ve been driving in & with BMWs all of my life and have been following the history of the companies certain models (from 1998 onward) I have noticed that through the years everyone has thier own opinion about how M is supposed to be, what they´re supposed to make & how it´s supposed to look.

Truth is that every time BMW M has brought out a new car the most of us (especially us M drivers) look at it as if it were from another planet. Then we get used to it and then eventually some of us end up buying the car we hated a few months ago because we´ve become used to the sight or more in my case have gradually come to fall in love with the new look.

I have driven them all and found that each car has it´s advantages & disadvs.
The greatest mistake I ever made & recently realized it was the M3 E92 which was out of pure bias. Seeing all the pictures of how the car was suspected to look and different artists wanted it to appear was kind like a hord of babbling chickens in a pen
No one knew what they were talking about and everyone knew the car was a FAIL & never could live up to the old E46. It was so different when it came out that it immedeatly polarized the M world: you either loved or hated it.

I really hated the car the first time I saw the "Erlkönig" (this our German word for a disguised driving prototype), the car was just
In the mean time the car has grown on me and tbh I have fallen in love with the car & decided to order one, ok I´m still having my thoughts about the rear view mirrors, I admit but the car is just great.

The same problem is now occuring with the F10 too much speculation and no idea as to what the car is going to look like or what kind of engine it will have. But ask yourselves an important question: Would they build a V8 TT to succeed the V10 if it were less capable ?
I do think that we should give the car & company the chance to surpass, prove & improve that what AMG and all the others out there could not achieve. Mabye M can reinvent the FI in high powered engines that will outlast anything known till now.

My thoughts

bye

I am trying to keep an open mind, but naturally have some bias as to what I hope and expect to see with the next generation. Based on what I have heard from reliable sources, the M division is being scaled down. Let's just hope that the F10 is a significant improvement, or many current M5/6 owners will start to look elsewhere. Unfortunately I have been totally smitten with this NA V10.

BTW, do you see a lot of the new M3's in Switzerland?
I know the chocolate there does NOT taste like

Concorde I feel your comments are bang on.

We are the first to criticise BMW and especially the M division when they announce new products or hear about rumors.

I remember my first M5, the E28. It was an amazing car and I loved it. About 18 months ago I drove an E28 M535i and was blown away at how responsive it was and how quick it was, then remembered that it was a very light car. But things have moved on, nd whilst I still love that car (and will probably buy another in the future just for old times sake), we have to understand that the world has moved on.

Last week I was in Germany for 4 days and rented a 535d from Sixt. I drove from Dusseldorf to Frankfurt and back and the car was amazing. Now if back in 1991 when I had my first M5, you had told me that in the future BMW would produce a Diesel that would blow this away I would hav laughed at you, but here we are.

I am reading all the comments about the rumors of the F10 M5 with a TT engine and the dismay people have. I must admit I was oneof them as I dont like turbo charged cars, but the facts are that this is the way things are going and there is no changing that. I recently drove a 335i TT, and was amazed at the way the engine performed, so now I have no quams about a TT M5.

Instead of moaning about what we think, we should concentrate on what BMW do. They make the best drivers Saloon cars in the world bar none.

So whatever they put in the next M5, you can bet that it will be the best drivers car of all. Everytime a new M5 comes out it raises the standard for all others to follow. In any road test, they say the competition are as quick, maybe faster, but none has the sheer feel and driver focus of an M5. It will always be like this.

Concorde's point about the M3 is valid and we just have to realise the world does not stand still, technology moves forward and we must do the same. The original M3 would be hammered by any of today's hot hatchbacks, yet it is still a classic...... just like every M car

We are a priviliged few and we should not take that lightly, but we should all look forward to what i coming and accept it.

So lets stop moaning and keep enjoying.

Thats it rant over!!!!

Depends on what kind of M3s you mean ? The new ones are quite rear so far but I´ve seen some.
This is the reason I bought my new M3, it´s going to be the last real M ever and as I just love the V8 sound... I had to have it.
I have a very close connction to M and have heared some good and some bad news but cannot comment on anything as I do not want to threaten my relationship with them. Lets say that if you read between the lines every now & then when someone from M says something you see more that meets the eye.
The chockolate here... ok there are some Belgians that are better. But Insiders here do not buy the average store brands.

My deep reservations are along 2 vectors:

Natural Aspiration: Nothing beats it. Responsive. We are fairly certain they are going with turbo charging, for obvious fuel economy and emissions reasons. The real question is if they can make the new engine feel as good as the current S85 with technologies like KER.

Investment Cutback: The US economy is bad, and BMW is on a new kick of improving profitability. But looking at the choices they have made like building stupid fast trucks like the X5M and X6M, will they have the proper resources for proper new M3, M5 and M6s?

I will stop pounding BMW on the internet and will remain open minded but BMW ///M needs to deliver on the new ///M cars or I am going away from the brand.

Natural Aspiration I believe that the problem with the Turbo-hole will disappear very soon. BMW M would not be stupid enough to bring out a car less responsive or lesser powered than the previous model
Investment Cutback Let´s face the facts, you want to make money and keep your customers pleased ? Then you have to find a golden path. I do believe that M now has the chance to truly (im)prove thier technological advantage ! Look at the displacement MB had to create to bring up a 450+ HP car: a whole 6.2 ltr. V8.. M did it with just 4 ltr for 420 HP
If you ask me, BMW being one of the worlds finest turbocharged engine builders is going to group up with the M-Technology and seriously kick the crap out of the competioners asses, s´cuse my french

I beleive Steve Dinan hinted that turbocharged is the way to go.
