Current issue of Roundel magazine says next M5 most likely will be a 550 hp. direct injected V10 with 7 sp. DCT transmission. Jury appears to still be out on this one.

yes...think the cars you see cruising around are 555i's--not m's--a great deal can be done with the e60 block in terms of expansion, fuel efficiency and turbo charging if need be...direct injection will help with fuel economy...currently, i run my car in m mode at all times and average 13.4 mpg consistently in almsot all conditions...the smg is certainly a drag on fuel economy and with direct injection, better programming and dct, think 15 mpg can be achieved...think there is too much potential with the v-10 to abandon it at this point considering the parts are a virtual overlap with the m3's...

Saw that as well--speculation seems all over the map with this. Too bad we don't have a mole working in the M division. The suspense might actually kill some of us.

I'm only telling you what I have seen. What do you think of this news? I get the feeling that IF this is the engine then BWM will be making a torque monster.

Just spoke with a reliable source who has inside contacts in Germany. Several interesting things regarding the M division. Apparently, they were considering a 5.7 liter NA V-10 for the next generation and even had test mules, but this was voted down by the board members due to production costs. To save costs, the M division has decided to take an AMG approach--simply modifying the existing 5 series platform with an already-existing TT V8. No longer will our cars be built from the ground up as unique M cars. Clearly, money>>>>>pride and heritage among the current powers that be at M. We are truly witnessing the end of a great era in car-making history. Kind of reminds me of what has happened to music over the past 30 years.

Thanks for the post.

Pathetic! BMW should have the demographic data for us M buyers, we are not stupid.....if they try to market a piece of sh*t wearing an ///M badge for the F10 M5 / F12 M6..... I am done with BMW.

That is really sad if true. Well I am still hell bent on getting my slightly-used E60 next year. So this will not affect me for the next 5-10 yr.
