Thoughts gentlemen......................................... .....

Quotes by Gustav below:

"due to make its first public appearance at the Frankfurt motor show in 2011"

M division’s head of development, Albert Biermann, said the new driveline will also receive taller gearing

We’ve been forced to switch to an engine offering greater low-end torque than the naturally aspirated engine to ensure it can cope with the longer axle ratio,” Biermann said. “It’s the only real way we can balance achieving the environmental improvements we want while retaining similar levels of performance to today’s car.”

Biermann indicated there will be a 30 per cent increase, taking torque from today’s 383lb ft at 6100rpm to somewhere around 500lb ft at little more than 1500rpm. Biermann is also confident the V8’s unique induction system will provide similar levels of throttle response to today’s model.

That means 650 Nm.

The development process is at an early stage. We’re concentrating on the durability and cooling of the driveline at the moment

DKG / DCT will be the gearbox apparantly: "Along with the new engine, the car will also get a new gearbox, a beefed-up version of the M3’s seven-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission), as previewed on the 25th anniversary version of the M5 unveiled last week."

"Weight saving is playing a big part in the M5’s development, with carbonfibre being used in the bodyshell. BMW is working on a carbonfibre roof and bootlid, mainly because, being sited on top of the car, they are less vulnerable to impact damage."

"The car will get Active Aerodynamics, which blanks off parts of the grille and cooling intakes during warm-up and under light throttle load."

Much like some changes of Efficient Dynamics of todays BMWs.

"Lightweight design has been one of the core skills of the BMW Group for decades – after all, reducing weight is a major factor in cutting fuel consumption. While those two behemoths put out 547 bhp, a BMW source told us the twin-turbo V-8 engine "has the potential to put out far more than that." A good guess would peg the new M5 at just under 600 bhp. Gearbox-wise, we were told the current M5's SMG is definitely dead (okay by us), almost certain to be replaced by BMW's twin-clutch M-DCT system with six (or more likely seven) forward gears."

Still speculation and nothing official from BMW, but not looking good for the V10 or SMG.

I really was hoping for both!!!

With the Audi RS6 at 580hp and a 0-60 of ~4.5 seconds, I feel like the new M5 will have 620-650 hp and a 0-60 in 4.2 seconds or less. Reason being is that BMW has to set a new benchmark in the ultimate sedan category for it to be profitable. If they take a conservative route (580-600hp) they will be just another alternative to the already present Mercedes, Audi, Cadillac sports sedans on the market and will get stuck competing on price. By setting themselves ahead of the pack in performance they insure that there are no close alternatives, capture a much larger market share and won't have to discount them to get them out the door. The M5 has always been the "halo" sedan and I doubt that ///M is going to come out with a car to have it be surpassed and second best in a year or two.

Just my thoughts on the matter. I was really discouraged by some of the more conservative performance estimates i have been reading. Who wants to pay ~$100+K on a car that gets beat up by a Cadillac?

The new generation of the BMW 5 Series will be presented in November 2009. The M version is still a bit slow in coming - in the summer or autumn of 2010, it might be ready. Information about new business-understatement-there are hardly any cars. Still, Dr. Kay Segler, head of M GmbH, tells us: "We want to achieve fuel consumption reduction of 20 percent." On the north loop, we then proceed with more in a single piece: an anniversary M5. To questions about the car, we are cultivating silence - but we must go along, Claudia Hürtgen sits at the helm. The Special-M5 ballert off without traction interruption - apparently believes that a new version of the already deployed in the M3 seven-speed dual clutch transmission, now also the torque of an M5 engine. This finding is expressed by us Hürtgen uncommented. The motor rotates up to 9,000 rev / min high and feels after 600 hp. In the next few descendants in 1985 in Amsterdam featured stealth M5 we are already looking forward.
