"Weight saving is playing a big part in the M5’s development, with carbonfibre being used in the bodyshell. BMW is working on a carbonfibre roof and bootlid, mainly because, being sited on top of the car, they are less vulnerable to impact damage."

I do not know how credible this rumour is, however, a post on Autoblog from a supposed reputable source seems to indicte that BMW will not produce an F10 M5. This seems to counter the prior posts that they are testing a variant right now with a V8 engine.

So I was reading up on the SMG III on my '08 M5-- and came across this...
I truly hope that this is/will be true! :typing:

"Recent developments by other manufacturers, specifically the production of the more powerful Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG (507 bhp (378 kW; 514 PS)), Audi RS6 (C6) (426 kW (579 PS; 571 bhp)), and the second generation Cadillac CTS-V (556 bhp (415 kW; 564 PS)) which bested the M5's N�rburgring lap time, has inspired BMW to go back to the drawing board. The 2011 M5's power output is expected to hit or exceed the 600 bhp (447 kW; 608 PS) mark, up from its current 500 bhp (373 kW; 507 PS)."

Performance Estimates

Lots of talk about what kind of engine/transmission, but how does it have to perform to be the benchmark performance sedan again?

With the Audi RS6 at 580hp and a 0-60 of ~4.5 seconds, I feel like the new M5 will have 620-650 hp and a 0-60 in 4.2 seconds or less. Reason being is that BMW has to set a new benchmark in the ultimate sedan category for it to be profitable. If they take a conservative route (580-600hp) they will be just another alternative to the already present Mercedes, Audi, Cadillac sports sedans on the market and will get stuck competing on price. By setting themselves ahead of the pack in performance they insure that there are no close alternatives, capture a much larger market share and won't have to discount them to get them out the door. The M5 has always been the "halo" sedan and I doubt that ///M is going to come out with a car to have it be surpassed and second best in a year or two.

Just my thoughts on the matter. I was really discouraged by some of the more conservative performance estimates i have been reading. Who wants to pay ~$100+K on a car that gets beat up by a Cadillac?

I'm not 100% sure how to judge the quotes from the German text but it seems that there might be truth in this.
