I just feel for you guys trying to keep these gems on the road while maintaining the pieces that make them Alpina. Just my 2 cents : )

I bought Lucie the B8 Touring (014) in June 2008. I was lucky to spot her on Pistonheads and fate seemed to be in play when I discovered that this very rare car was only 2 miles from my home in Sussex! Not so lucky was the water consumption issue, which was finally solved by replacing all the engine hoses, then the radiator and in the end skimming the heads and fitting new M5 head gaskets (nearly £4,000!). Since then the experience of owning a B8 has been great fun, particularly this summer, when I have showed the car at two BMW Car Club shows and done several European driving holidays. The shot below shows Lucie alongside my Porshe 944 Turbo Cabriolet (sadly now sold).

Attachment 92746

First up was my annual trip to Le Mans 24 hour race in mid-June. This was the first time I had used a LHD car in 10 years of doing this journey. We completed 1200 miles at an average of 22mpg which considering we were carrying all our camping gear and doing some spirited driving seemed a good result and compared favourably with other cars I have had. The edge was taken off the journey by my co-driver who was unused to driving ‘foreign’ cars and so misjudged where he was on the road. As a result, he managed to hit a kerb in a French village at speed, damaging the front and rear nearside wheels!

Attachment 92747

We limped home at a reduced speed and his wallet became some £800 lighter once I had bought / refurbished the two wheels and tyres in the UK. But the unexpected bonus came because our campsite (Maison Blanche) was next to the track and after the race we were able to drive on and park by the Starting Grid! It was great to photgraph Lucie alongside some of my mates other cars, including a beautiful Lotus Elan Sprint DHC, Morris Minor Pickup, restored TR4 and Honda NSX.

Following Le Mans, I decided to have Lucie’ Inspection I service conducted at my local BMW dealer, Vines of Gatwick, a first-rate BMW dealer who also look after our E46 M3. The service was carried out by their Master Technician (top man) as no-one else had seen a B8 before! Many admiring comments were made and she passed with a clean bill of health, apart from some minor oil leaks (more of this later).

The end of June /early July saw my wife and me taking a 5 day trip into northern France with Lucie. We completed around 600 miles without any problems and achieved a more respectable 27mpg. The ferry journey was just great and on board we enjoyed a cracking breakfast in Langan's Restaurant (well recomended)

Attachment 92748

During the trip we stopped at some of the WWI memorials including the famous Thiepval Memorial site on July 1st (see below), the anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Attachment 92758

Next up came the two visits to the BMW car club shows in August. Firstly at the Duxford Aerodrome on August 2nd, where I was joined by fellow B8 Touring owner, Chris Tranter, en-route from Luxembourg to visiting his family near Birmingham.

Attachment 92749

It was great to share stories with another owner, who has also gone through an expensive ‘entry fee’ to becoming a B8 owner! Chris was able to help me realise that the bonnet of my car is not an original because the underfelt was still attached to it. Five minutes later and Chris had removed the felt and handed it to me! No wonder the head gaskets had failed, with all that heat being kept under it!!

Attachment 92750

I saw Chris again 2 weeks later at the national BMW Festival at Gaydon the UK National Heritage Museum on August 16th. We were parked next to each other in the Alpina section, which was very well represented amongst the other ‘more common’ BMWs! After a successful and enjoyable day we headed home. Chris has since noticed that our B8’s were featured in the review of the BMW Festival at Gaydon ‘Total BMW’s October issue. The comment read ‘its rare to see the V8 powered Alpina E36 at all in the UK but we found these two B8 4.6’s parked up next to each other’. It made owning such a car a real privilege.

Attachment 92753

Then in early September, my wife, daughter and I drove down to Servoz, near Chamonix in the French Alps. A fabulous journey there of some 550 miles in one day, followed by a week of touring some of the most spectacular scenery France has to offer. Highly recommended, particularly in the off-season when the snow is not there.

Attachment 92752

On the return leg we avoided the Autoroute and drove through Geneva, over the Jura Mountain range and on to Reims where we stayed overnight. Back home in the UK we had covered over 1,400 miles without any problems and at 28mpg.

Attachment 92754

My daughter now says she prefers being a passenger in the Alpina to the M3! Praise indeed.

So what next? Well there is a minor oil leak, which appears to be the power steering hoses so these will be replaced in December and then the bonnet should get a re-spray as it has some strange splits in the paintwork. I may also go for this oil cooler modification cleverly developed by some of the forum guys, when funds allow.

Other than that Lucie just keeps on rolling and in that beautifully understated way that Alpinas are famous for. I must admit to having become smitten by the Alpina philosophy and someday I may even buy a D3 Touring if my job means doing a lot more driving than at present. Who knows? Good luck to all you other B8ers out there.

Just to let you know I added 1 car to the stable: Alpina C1 2.5

Unfortunately I don't have better pics right now, but I can tell you the car is in quite a good condition and drives superb! Engine feels strong at all revs and sounds like an M20 should mmmmmm

Even though I normally like E30's better with chrome bumpers and window frames, I really think this one is very cool in shadowline!

Alpina B10 BiTurbo #360 Back on the road

Since this board isn’t that active lately I shall post my latest experience with BT #360. On a regular Sunday afternoon CJ & I were testing my new equipment to log AFR, boost pressure, fuel pressure and many other signals. I wanted to see how “healthy” the BT was and on what kind of AFR the engine was running. The Saturday before I installed al equipment and the car was ready for some runs.

As I mentioned, Sunday we drove to the highway to make some full load runs. Nothing weird came up, only the engine ran a bit to lean according to my experiences. Adjusting the full load mixture during runs made this much better.
After we drove back to home CJ picked up his E30 325i and I went back to the garage with the BT to work on the log files. As I drove back and accelerated with 60-70% throttle /4000rpm the engine sounded like it was in the rev limiter…. Thank god I was near the garage. No weird noises, or other remarkable things could be seen/heared. I checked all spark plugs and #3 was wet… Since it was Sunday I wanted to go further on Monday evening. Well Monday evening was a disaster day, when I removed the valve cover this could be seen:

Both rocker arms of cylinder #3 were broken of. As I inspected the valve clearances of the rest nothing weird came up. Only a small tear in inlet rocker arm #6. Since the ignition sequence is 1-5-3-6*-2-4 I suspect a to high rpm most likely caused by a miss shift.

Than the rebuilt could begin, some enjoying pics or you…

Cilinderhead assembled, new: rocker arms, rockerarm shafts, exhaust valve, valve guider seals, ...

As the sump gasket was leaking, it was a good uppertunidy to replace the gasket to with the gaskets from the front timing cover. As Wout (SebringNL) says to S38 engines, it can be the same to B7/5 engines... A domino effect!

Worn chain guiders and sprockets

Most surprising was the crankshaft sprocket, 2 tooths were missing!

Of course these parts were replaced with original BMW parts (chain crankshaft-camshaft, chain crankshaft-oil pump, spanner for camshaft and oil pump, guider for camshaft and all sprockets)

Everything together....

Since the car was almost 1,5 month on a bridge it was time to polish it

According to CJ the engines runs more quiet than before, hope it will give some more bhp to :2:.

So Mr.CJ do you pick these tomorrow? >

It has arrived in Sweden and all the papers are done and dusted!
I sold my E28 B7 Turbo and regret it so much that I started to look for another one. Since I didn't like the ones on mobile.de I looked elsewere. However, approximatley one week after the E28 left my garage I saw a new add with very little information on mobile. No pictures but it stated that there was only 3 owners and with full history and only 114750 km left behind! The only difference from my other B7 was the fact that it was a coupé. It had the same color scheme and gold striping. It actually left Alpina the month after my E28! ;)

A friend that speaks german called the owner and after a 2 hour phone call it was clear to me that this car could indeed be a very nice one!:M5thumbs:.

I bought the car unseen! This is what arrived one week later.
I was quite happy with the car. Now I will repaint the front spoiler and thats it! =) It's in really good condition. I guess my Ford GT40 dream has to wait a day or two ;-)

I had a great one week trip around Germany. We did a lot of driving. Landed in Berlin last Wednesday and drove to Munich the same day. The next night we stayed at Nurmburg, then Dusseldorf, then a little town below Bremerhaven(SP), then Hamburg, then the last night back Berlin.

We were driven around in this:

Evening all,

I need to service my B12 6.0 and also a B12 5.7 that I have in stock at the moment.

Can anyone tell me if the oil/air/fuel filters are 750i items or Alpina specific? Also what spark plugs are recommended?

Many thanks in advance,

Alpina Factory Tour - Protocol

I am going to be in Frankfurt next week and have considered traveling down to Munich and Buchloe to check out the Alpina Factory. A few basic questions;

I am going to be in Frankfurt next week and have considered traveling down to Munich and Buchloe to check out the Alpina Factory. A few basic questions;

1) Does one need to call Alpina in Advance for a factory tour?

2) What does the tour consist of? How long?

3) Maybe Alpina does not bother with USA Alpina owners who own old Alpinas like my e24 B10 3.5 as we may not in the market in a new for a new Alpina. Even though the newer B7 limosine is available in the USA I am not in the market for that Alpina.

4) Maybe I would only be interested in seeing an on-going resatoration of an older Alpina model by the factory?

5) I would probably try to be at the Alpina factory Monday morning Nov 16, 2009.

But maybe there are better things to do in Germany as a first time visitor than look at automobiles?

Hi Guys,
I'm new to the forum and was wondering if any of you had experienced or heard of this unusual running problem I'm having.
My car is a 2002 Alpina B10 V8 4.6. When it drops from choke/fast idle to normal idle, it should run at approx 450/500rpm. On the majority of start-ups however, the revs drop to the low marker line on the tachometer (which must only be 250rpm at most) and it starts to misfire.
The rpm's do the same when the car has been on a long journey or on the motorway for 15 miles or so - as soon as you come to rest, the engine is almost stalling.
The ultra-low idle gives a nasty side-effect too when rolling to a stop: the gearbox heavily slams from 3rd when changing down to 2nd. I presume this is down to the lower hydraulic pressure in the gearbox caused by the low revs??
Anyway, a good local mechanic/auto electrician hooked my car up to his top-end Bosch diagnostics, and it showed BOTH O2 sensors were offline when the revs were low (however it DIDNT throw up a fault code or engine management light!!). He reset the ECU parameters and they BOTH came back online together and the car idled perfect (~500rpm). A few moments later they BOTH went offline again (still no fault codes) and the rough low idle came back. We monitored the O2 sensors and it showed both pre-cat sensors going on and offline together resulting in good or bad idle depending whether they were working or not. So I'm sure you can understand that I'm doubtful its the sensors at fault - surely it would be one or the other going offline if a sensor was bad.
So there you have it - can anyone shed some light on this problem that mystifies everyone I ask about it? Even BMW were vague about what it could be (arent they always....)
Thanks in advance for any contributions
-Ben

ever driven. I've owned many BMW's M3(few), M5 e39(second favorite), M5 e60(least favorite) and couple 550's, great cars. I was lucky that one of my friends owns a dealership and was able to buy it at a whole sale price, and the car is worth every penny. I showed it to my friends today who has a CLS63, and after he drove it, he said it was also one of the best cars , very refined and so much power, much better feeling that his cls and it looks "bad". My car is 2007 black on black, 12k mi, i am not sure what are available options, but i know the only thing i dont have is night vision and dvd entertainment.
Hello Everyone

I was just wondering how all the Alpina fans would compare Alpina against the latest that Brabus has to offer.

Their V12 engines with 750 PS and 1350 NMs of torque can give the big boys like Pagani and Koenigsegg a run for their money.

Will Alpina offer something that can compete with the Brabus monsters?

What are your thoughts?

I believe I know the answer to this already, but is there any way or any source for individual Pierburg fuel injection parts? I seem to remember that the official answer when I got my Pierburg DL unit rebuilt was that Pierburg could not be contacted nor individual parts purchased, you were forced to go through Alpina who has only one option - rebuild.

My fuel pressure regulator has developed a leak. I have spares and have dissambled it and found a damaged diaphragm. If I could source a new diaphragm, I could reassemble and be on my way. I do not wish to wait months and spend thousands to send to Alpina for "a full rebuild".

Any assistance or leads appreciated.

Also, as it is a simple diaphragm, any thoughts or leads on material to make my own would also be appreciated.

Looking for advice on new purchase, e36 M3 or Alpina b3 3.2?

Hi all,

I have just sold my pristine e34 M5 Touring. I am looking for a replacement. I am looking at an e36 M3 but would also consider a B3 3.2.

As far as I could gather info on the differences between the two contenders, the B3 is supposed to be more refined and a better all around package. I would use the car as a daily driver, I have a Porsche 968 CS M030 and an Aprilia RSV Factory for sporting purposes.

How is it with reliability? The M3 is pretty renowned for its bulletproof nature (except water pump issues).

I suppose B3's mpg is also better than the M3's, but certainly lightyears better than the e34 M5 :).

Should I be concerned about high mileage (200 000 km) when full service history and invoices are at hand?

Are there any issues, I should be aware of?

Any opinions and recommendations are welcome.

thanks

I just joined today and wanted to introduce myself. My Name is Andy Gardner and I am from Asheville,it I recently purchased a 1980 Alpina B6 2.8 #201 from southern California. There were 2 e21 Alpina's in my town when I was in high school and I fell in love. I have been looking for this car for about 14 years now and finally found it. It was imported in 1985 and has been in southern California ever since.

The former owner of the car purchased it in 1985 when was when it was imported into the USA. I have the original import documents along with reciepts dating into the eighties. This car is currently a numbers matching car however the engine is in need of a total rebuild. Another thing about the car is that it isn't the original color which was Polaris. I believe that the car was repainted prior to entering the USA because all the service records indicate that the car was black. Fortunately the paint job is very thorough and you can only tell by a few scratches and by looking under the front or rear dashes.

I joined this forum because I feel that it is probably the most knowledgeable group of people regarding these specific vehicles. My car isn't perfect but maybe with some good advice from you I will be able to get it as close as possible.

You can find the picture's of it here, This is how I received it. Don't worry the fog lights are going to come off and I have already acquired an original steering wheel and shift knob to put into the car.

I am looking for the ALPINA seat fabric that was used on the Scheel seats.
I need enough to cover the rear seat and 2 driver seats.

The Material I am in need of is the same in this Photo.

today my babies were prepared for long hibernation.
