E39 1996-2003 For Sale E39 M5 Short Shifter (NEW BMW E60 545i short throw shift lever w/BMW install parts)

Selling a new BMW OEM E60 550i short throw shift lever with factory parts needed for install. This factory BMW E60 545i shifter works perfectly in the E39 M5 and is virtually identical to the shifter E39 M5 short shifter DINAN sells at a fraction of the cost. I sold my second E39 M5 before I got a chance to install these parts so they are all still brand new in from the BMW dealer parts counter.

25 11 7 546 373 -- BMW part number for short shifter
25 11 1 469 397 -- BMW part number for shifter plastic bearing cup
Also including the following brand new BMW oem shifter install parts -- nuts, plastic washers, clip -- this way, when you install the new short shifter, you will be replacing pretty much everything with fresh brand new parts that will really tighten up the new shifter vs the slop/play in the factory shifter.

+ 2 quarts of Royal Purple Synchromax transmission fliud if you would like to drain and refill your transmission fluuid when you install the shifter -- which will help protect the tranny and really make the shifts feel the best possible.

Radio Module Aux input

So I searched, researched and tried a bunch of things to get an Aux input working but with no success. After much reading, I found out that there is an "old" new gen. radio BM53 and "new" new gen.. My MY is 05/02 (with M-Audio) so the Aux plug is not present behind the board monitor (I verified) and I tried pins 3,4 and 10 on the radio module with a homemade aux cable incorporating the 300Kohm and .22uF capacitors in line. My radio module plug wires look a bit different than most BM53 pics I've found online when the 2 smaller plugs have a different pin assignment. Most photos I've seen have the tape going into the smaller white plug and the smaller black is free of any wires or that’s where the aux wire go from the front board monitor. Looking at the photo below, I have my CDC going to the white plug and my tape going to the black.

I also noticed that my DSP gets analog feed since the coaxial plug on top of it is no connected to anything. Then there is this mystery coaxial that plugs into my radio module and goes inside my rear deck.

Is there some sort of an A/D converter somewhere? I do lose my radio sound if I unplug it but didn’t test what would happen in tape or CD mode. Any input is greatly appreciated. If no Aux input is available, I might just tap into the CDC audio lines for now.

new windshield - awesome deal

I just had a new windshield installed for $160 (ppg glass). I bought new moldings from the dealer for $57 a side and the installer used his clips which were the exact same as oem. Fit and finish couldn't be better and the guy who did the work was great, 30 years experience and took his sweet time and care. Even when done, he adjusted the wipers several times until they were perfect and HE was satisfied. You don't run into this type and pride of workmanship much and I couldn't be more satisfied. I took a few business cards for my car lovin buddies, but for anyone else in the St. Louis area, I can highly recommend this guy:

Broken plastic bit on Chain Tensioner!

I'm changing the valve cover gasket and I had a look at the 5-8 cylinder chain tensioner and found that the plastic bit that the chain are resting on, on the chain tensioner is broken.

Any good idea how to change it? Do the chain between inlet and exhaust camshaft need to go of and most of all, how do you do that?

Does the "///M" emblem light up when the headlights are turned to the on position, whether it be for parking/angel eyes or headlights. I can't remember if it does or does not. If so, are there any ideas on troubleshooting without taking the whole speedo/dash off? Any insight will be greatly appreciated..:lightbulb:

Front Tire Size Question

Hello All! M5 newb here ;) Purchased an 06 a few weeks ago. It has 245/40/19 re050 bridgestones on the front and I want to remove them ASAP because:

1. They are smaller than the OEM size
2. Noisy as heck during deceleration from 40 MPH - i've experienced this before with the same tire on a different vehicle

Is it possible to run a 275/40/19 up front on the stock suspension? I'm interested in running a taller tire than stock (27.6 vs 27), since the M5 has some serious gap in the front - FYI I have had quite a few vehicles with modified suspensions and I really don't want to modify this one.

I understand that the 275/40/19 wheel width recommendation is 9-10" and the OEM wheel is only 8.5 - I'm thinking the .5 wouldn't be an issue.

Is anybody running that setup on the stock wheel? With/Without spacers?

Although occasionally, there are the nightmares of mishaps/body damage that I'm all too happy to wake up from... :oh:

Hello,

My car has done just under 400 miles and yesterday whilst testing the (M) button, I inadvertently exceeded the 105 mph and touched 120 for a few seconds. Is this likely to affect/invalidate the warranty? How do BMW view such digressions?

My Speed Limit alarm is set at 90 mph and now I wish I could have two alarms! I intend to drive it very slow for the next 1100 miles and will try very hard not to breach the 105 limit again.

Seeing peoples constant headaches trying to keep their older Alpinas on the road, I was wondering if Alpina really cares about these older models. I know alpina is a very small company but I think it would be great if they set up some type of heritage center for these great Alpinasof the past. While I love all Alpinas, I feel that the older models have a more unique nature to them. I just feel for you guys trying to keep these gems on the road while maintaining the pieces that make them Alpina. Just my 2 cents : )

Getting the run around on replacing steering wheel

My 06 M5 has 52k on the odo and I have owned it for about a month. When I was cleaning the interior I noticed the steering wheel was flaking. According to the board this is a common problem and the some members had got it "good willed" after the factory warranty had expired. I went to the dealer and he basically said that since I didn't buy the car from him he wasn't interested in helping me get the wheel replaced under warranty and that I should call BMWNA. I called them and they said it was up to the dealer and if he wouldn't back me they wouldn't do anything about it. It sucks that BMW won't stand behind there product.grrrrrrr

Its the kit that CA-Automotive used to sell (made by Alutech) and is fitted to at least one car on the forum ('blue thunder' has the kit installed).

The kit should bring a standard beast to about 525 - 575bhp.

Is there a tell tale sign my clutch was really replaced?

Is there anything I can look at under the car to ensure my clutch was, in fact, replaced?

I'm asking because the dealer claims they replaced my clutch and flywheel, but the clutch didn't slip, it shifted great, and I don't feel any difference at all after the work. It was a warranty job and I didn't get any documents when I picked the car up. I have my paranoid doubts. Oh yeah, I'm also paranoid of the boogyman being under my bed, but that's a whole 'nother story.

With just ASR intake and exhaust car dynoed 455 whp and 341 tq...

i would have been perfectly happy with 440 whp. The most amazing thing about the mods is that Abid overlayed them with a stock dyno they had saved in the computer. Around 3k rpms theres about 60 -70 tq gain its incredible.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and while I suppose I could copy and paste the entire blog article here, I prefer to give a link. Since I don't sell advertising on my personal blog or promote anything in particular that will hopefully not be adverse to the forum policies here. In short this is an in depth article about the process (and money I spent) dialing in my 2008 M3 for track days. I'm in the yellow run group so I'm a good driver, but not a great driver. Bought new wheels, tires, went with racing pads, SS brake lines and better brake fluid and in the beginning had nothing but problems. Looks like my problems might be over finally. Last thing on my list is a front brake kit since the M3 stock brakes are just lame for the track (single piston calipers, rubber lines, no vents for airflow, etc..). In all fairness they are great for street use and will put me though the windshield but they simply cannot hold up on the track under any rigorous conditions.

I had a run in with an particular blk on blk new CTS-V, I was trailing him for a few exits with no bite he wanted nothing to do with me. I was a bit disapointed, ok ok i was very disapointed at him and carried on, I was looking foward to racing him on an empty Highway with ample room for top speed. Well what happens when we get off the next exit and end up at a light. ahhh now he wants to race well unfortunally he spanked me I dont know what happned but he had 2 car leghnts on me by 3rd gear and more as i got into 4th. maybe i just didnt have perfect shifts :sad1:

Odd suspension observation -- suspension suddenly firmer ???

Hi all:

I noticed that in the past two days, my suspension has become noticeably more controlled with the body motions.

It's like my car has a better ride -- but also noticeably better body control and has a lot less roll in the turns.
It's kind of baffling to me.

The only thing I can think of is that it has been very cold the past few days. Maybe the cold temp makes the shock fluid more viscous and therefore firmer ? :dunno:

Or is this a sign of a shock that is already worn out doing one last gasp of intermittent good operation before totally failing?
Or could it be a case of loose or improperly fitted end links on the sway bars?

I haven't modded my car lately with anything.

Anybody else experience anything like this?

See signature for the mods I got. I took it to my mustang guy who doestn work on M5 did the dyno and only put down 416 with my mods on a dyno jet!!! Gonna do it again in a week when we have more time and go over everything grrrrrrr

Noise when turning Right

Today on the way to the gym I noticed a rubbing type noise coming from the right rear side of the car. It seemed to be more apparent when
making a hard right turn. Has anybody had a similar experience? I did have my Dinan rear diff changed under warranty about three months ago.
The diff oil was changed after 1200 miles. I hate when something new comes up. Any advise would be appreciated.
My car has 52500 miles on the odometer.

The guys in my shop took our M6, GTR, and a customer's Noble M400 to the Gainesville Raceway last night. Typical night of no traction with street cars and all the dirt that comes off their tires. I've owned this awesome car since December 2005 and purchased it as a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle from Otto's BMW in West Chester PA. All maintenance is up to date, always garaged, non-smoker.

Options include voice-activated Navigation System (with updated NAVTEQ database), 6-disc CD changer, BMW's DSP M Audio System, BMW short shift kit, BMW integrated bluetooth-voice activated phone system (ULF), moon roof and front/rear bumper proximity sensor system.

Black leather leather is in immaculate condition. Michellin Pilot Sport run-flat rear tires less than 3,000 miles ago. Front tires estimated at 70%, also run-flats. One scratch by the fuel door (see picture).

Should I buy extended warranty for my M5?

I just bought my M a few weeks ago with 135 k on it and love the car. It came with a ton of repair and maintenance records so I know it's been cared for. I am now considering extended warranty and the only one offered in California is by CARCHEX. They will only cover powertrain on this car at a cost of $2229 for 3 years / 100k miles. What do you guys think? I know parts are really expensive on the car, esp. engine. Here is the contract details they emailed me. Your opinion is appreciated.

Loud vanos noise - what can I do?

I have a pretty loud version of what I believe is Vanos noise - sorry about the video. I was really just trying to get the noise.

ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

Even after the car warms up and is driven around, this noise persists. The car is driving well - no obvious problems
or issues with idle or normal driving. The noise definitely sounds like it is coming from the top end of the
engine - does not sound like rod knock to me. Now my questions to the collected wisdom of the board:

1. Does it seem likely that it could be vanos noise even after driving for say 15 minutes or more?
2. Would a fix of the o-rings and a solenoid check be in order - and would it help?
3. How does one check the accumulator to verify that it is in place (this is a 2001 car) and works?

Here is a complete list of current Peak Codes:

29 - “Air mass sensor, Cyl #1-4”
39 - “Air mass sensor, Cyl #5-8”
8C - Engine noise too high
69 - “Engine coolant temperature, Plausibility”

Fume smell when using Aircon, coolant leak spotted.

Yesterday whilst driving with the air conditioning on for almost the entire trip (a first for me) I started to smell fumes of some sort, somewhere between petrol and cng gas i'd put it... this is the first time I've used the aircon for any period of time as the belt gives off an aweful screech when taking off 1st and 2nd gears... but I was taking my mother out for a drive to pickup some HiFi gear and it was 37.5deg celcius outside... and she's the only car left in our garage with a somewhat functioning aircon system ;).

Anyway, coolant temp gauge is rock solid, just to the left of center. Oil temp stayed at about 90-95deg.

I get home and park the car, remove the hifi gear etc and as I come back to the car I notice water dripping from the front left of the engine bay, PAS/airbox side. Thought it might have been condensation from the aircon system etc.

Later in the evening the patch of water is still there... given it's still 30deg outside this indicates it is not mere condensation... turns out to be coolant. The overflow tank level was about 1cm below the plastic lip on the reservoir before I left and when I opened it last night the coolant level was sitting right up to the plastic lip.

Going to do some fishing around this weekend and see if there's a leak... I really need to check if the return pipe to the overflow is working (the one that can lead to a localised hotspot causing a headgasket failure)..

I've read a few threads on here about leaks and one mentioned a rock strike to the radiator... about 25mins into my journey a truck threw up a rock that hit the windscreen :(. Another may have hit the front, will poke around.

Stupid question:

Is there an overflow hose from the overflow bottle? I couldn't see one in the fading light last night and have been unsuccessful on RealOEM... think I'll just used the mk1 eyeball tomorrow morning..

Removing Valve Cover?

Well, I guess this has been mention before but I don't have time to search.

I have just removed all 8 nuts and the three bolts on in the front (these don't go all the way out right?) and are trying to remove the covers but they are stuck. Any hint/tips to how to remove them without destroying anything?

Another thing, any good idea in how to loose the FAN nut if you don't have that special water pump pully lock? This nut is links right? help

Anyone with the Bruce M. adapter for replacing the 06 taillights, can you tell me whether they just turn on or off or do they illuminate in the sequence that they do on the new cars? That is, they sort of increase in intensity when first turned on and then th supplemental (round) light turns on sequentially. You can see this when you press the remote unlock button.

Second, does anyone know where the light control module is located? In the trunk? Under the hood? Kick panel?

Got my first speeding ticket today

Came home from work this afternoon and found my first speeding ticket as owner of the beast in the mail. Not too big of a deal really, I was doing 112 km/h where 100 is the max so it won't break the bank. Still is a total waste of money, no matter how you slice it.

I never got speeding tickets before but I sort of expected it to happen at some point in time when owning an M5, so no surprises there. However, the weird thing in this case is (or maybe it's just proof of bad luck) my violation was recorded on october 10th of last month at approx. 7.00PM, which is just a couple of hours after I picked up the beast and became her proud owner!

Sure hope this isn't the first of many more to come, as it's extremely easy to go way too fast in this car....

Hey guys just thought I'd share my misfortune with you all! After the recent shite windy weather over here, there were quite a few trees down. Living out in the sticks as I do I hit a huge branch sticking outta the bushes!grrrrrrr:crying:

Here be the damage, front wing's dented and there is a scrape all the way down the side which will polish out (hard to see in pics), she's in for the work Monday to be completed by Thursday for the BMW day at Brands Hatch, also some rust he's sorting out for me at the same time, what a rush!!:eek7:

In sunny So Cal my monster is subjected to allot of sun. Being a black interior on Black Sapphire you can imagine it gets pretty hot in the parking lot. I've been searching for a custom made dash cover, one, to save the dash from the sun damage, and secondly to help reduce the glare that is reflected on the inside windshield from the dashboard.

Has anyone in here found a nice cover that suits the car. I've seen a couple of carpet versions and some cheap velour but neither with a HUD Cutout. Any help is much appreciated.:cool:

The trim is on its way, so now it's time to choose a new shift knob to go with the trim and Bimmian e-brake handle that I plan to get. I want to keep the illumination, and am considering two options:

Bimmian illuminated knob, $60, pic of azaytsev's car:

Illuminated ZHP knob, $165 from LeatherZ:

Obviously, the ZHP knob costs over $100 more, so I'm leaning towards the Bimmian knob, but I'm worried that the metal will be cold/hot all the time, although weather in Seattle generally stays between 30-90 degrees F and I have tinted windows. Does anybody have any real world input on the two? FYI I already have the E60 SSK + DSSR installed.

Can we please put a limit on signature lengths?

Hey guys-
I know I haven't been here long, but does anyone else think the extremely long multiple paragraphed signatures are a bit...much? I know people want to show off their modifications or what rare options their car comes with, but can't we just include that in our profile page or something? Do people really need to see that you're running 9.5" all around and which angel eye version you currently use along with your planned mods?

I just find it annoying to see only a few posts per "page" in a particular thread because of ridiculously long signatures.

Another one with EDC GONE!!

Hi All,

I have just recently finished off getting the EDC removed from my car and have fitted KW V2's. All I can say is wow, this setup is very good, I have been out in SS thanks to Dave and the ride of that car is very good also. But I have always wanted KW's so went with my heart at last after nearly 5 year of ownership.

Before anyone says oh how could you of done that EDC is the best etc, well its not for me and thats probaly the same for alot of you on here. I have renewed over the last few years, the bushes (Black PowerFlex), EDC struts, springs top mounts, everything and the car feels 10x better now than it did last month. Yes this is my opinion and yes I know alot of you like the EDC, but for me its not able to perform aswell as I would like.

Thanks to Sal for providing the KW's and sorting out the missing parts with out fuss! The car feels totally different, it is alittle harder than with KW's but most sporty cars are harder still, take a Mini Cooper the suspension on that is harder than my KW's, so it just goes to show there is alot harder stock stuff out there. I am not saying that KW's are the be all and end all, but for me they are ticking the boxes with ease compared to EDC.

Clutch and Transmission Hand in Hand?

My 06 Beast has only 25k miles. I am only the 2nd owner and have owned it for a couple of months now. Great car, absolutely love it. I've owned a couple M3's but this is my first M5. I'm definitely a BMW enthusiast.

Recently I've broken down twice, not happy. While driving in M mode, kinda hard (that is what the car is made for) the car started shifting really rough, banging into gears and bouncing around like crazy. It caused me to pull off the road. Then when I tried to put the car in first and give it some gas it would jerk forward and bounce around. I couldn't even drive home and had to get it towed to BMW. They said I had a leak in the SMG reservoir and it was repaired. After I got the car back this happened a 2nd time, now BMW is replacing my clutch.

I haven't got the M5 back yet but I am afraid there is more going on than just the clutch. I didn't feel any gradual wear while shifting gears. It just all of a suddon starting shifting really hard to the point where I could not change gears. I'm wondering if the transmission is going up or if this could just be the clutch itself?? It just seems really odd to me. Has anyone experienced this or have any input?

Hey all,
My situation has changed and I wil lbe driving a few hundred miles per week, mostly in traffic and through the winter, so this car is no longer ideal for many reasons, gas being one... That being said...
Late 06 car, (no smg issues) currently has 54000 miles. SMG, black/black, nav, cold weather pkg, pdc front/rear, extended leather, aluminum trim, rear shades. Paint/body/interior mint. Next service not due for another 14k miles, which will be front brakes/rotors. 4 near new tires and winter tires will go with the car. Rear brakes/rotors done a few thousand miles ago. Black paint has been wetsanded/poloshed and is amazing. Stock rims are pretty crappy, curb rash, nicks etc., 2 were repainted at some point. I was going to change them in the spring. Car looks runs awesome, and I hate to sell it but whatever, wah, wah, wah...
Just bought fidelity warranty through bmw, that I can transfer to you for 4500 more. its a 3/36k mi, bumper to bumper INCLUDING all smg parts/labor. This is the warranty that the dealer sells, and i can transfer it or just get it refunded as I am paying it off monthly.

Dynoing for the first time

Hey guys,

Taking my car to the dyno for the first time today. Anything I should expect them to do when they strap down the car? What gear should the car be dyno'd in? I am taking it to a shop that seems to work mostly on trucks and I'm not too sure they are familiar with dyno'ing a BMW m5. Is there anything I should make known to them? Or is it the same dyno'ing all cars? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I personally owe MANY MANY MANY people on this forum a beer/dinner/lap dance/high five/good game pat on the tooshie/whatever. What would everyone's thoughts be on organizing an E39 M5board meet in a neutral area sometime in the spring to make that happen? Try to get as many cars, but more importantly people, together as possible. If you can't drive, then fly and join the party. I will take personal responsibility to play Taxi from the airport for anyone who wants to fly. I would be willing to organize a meet, do all the leg work to schedule events, gather lodging info, and attempt to get some funds raised if there is enough interest. I have some connections in Columbus Ohio, where I live, but would be willing to do it wherever the majority seem to vote.....

I went to 4ngiefest last year in Atlanta GA, which is another forum's meet, E46fanatics.com. It was a blast to hang out with people who enjoy cars as much as I do. I would LOVE to get this group of guys together who share their passion for the THE SAME CAR as I do. Meet, greet, check out cars, have some dinner, share some brews, and have a few laughs.

speaker under passenger footwell?

so i was cleaning the beast today, and i noticed that there is a speaker under the steering column right next to the footwell light on the driver side. i have the logic 7 premium sound but a new discovery for me. but its definitely a speaker though i could hear the tones coming out of it

I have used these on my personal E90 M3. I end up getting wider tires. The tires are basically brand new since I only used them for 1500 miles, no burn outs, no aggressive driving, just regular driving from the shop to the home and some weekend driving taking out of towners around town.

I am looking to get 850 plus shipping, but local pick up is preferred if possible. Shipping should be roughly about 80 dollars or so from what I have seen.
