At what point do we think the e60 m5 will be worth more in parts than as a complete car?

I've recently seen cars in the uk go for as little as �12500 (~19k USD) which made me think.

- Residual value has broken the key 15k barrier, next stop 10k.
- Government green agenda doesn't sit well with a v10 500BHP beast
- Fuel prices likely to stabilise at best so running costs are out of reach of Joe Blogs
- M5 internal parts from BMW are really expensive
- Current crop are reaching the > 60k mileage 'barrier' thus likely to be requiring wear and tear work
- Warranty likely to be expiring if not expired so second hand part market becomes bigger.

If a insurance company wants rid of a wrote off M5 they must knock them out for peanuts.

Thoughts?

How to take out the climate control unit

Post up some pics of what you have. Wheel specs if you have them are great including offset or spacers used.

I'm in the process of getting a nice square setup for the beast but not 100% on the wheels I want to use. Post'em up!

Launch Control recording verified

Well, honestly we all knew it anyway, but I don't recall ever seeing any actual proof that the SMG computer stores the number of times Launch Control has been used on our cars. Well, because these are the kinds of things I get OCD about (although I've launched my M5 exactly 1 time, prior to the Euro flash), while digging around in some INPA files, I found this:

It is located in the SMG_60.BIV file that is output from the command Xtract.exe run on SMG_60.prg located in the C:\EDIABAS\ECU folder of an INPA installation.

From this, whether the current version of INPA E60 Daten allows you to view this number or not (I plan to look in a couple of hours), a custom INPA script can be written which will retrieve this number from the car.

If I can't access this with normal INPA, I'll make it my first programming experiment. I'm sure a lot of us would like to know for curiosity sake. (especially if buying used :eek:)

My SMG clutch replacement experience with pics!

Hi fellow board members!

I have super thankful to have the best online community for our beasts! And a big THANK YOU to the best indie Mechanic in Montreal !!!! PM for his contact info!

So i had the beast for over a year now and it never gave any problems, i knew the previous owner and the car was well maintained ! :biggrin:

Recently the car started giving me the Yellow COG only between 3-4k rpm when i would be in WOT, but only when the car was warm, after 10 minutes of driving, it was weird, so i got new smg fluid put it in and the adaptation took roughly 1 hour.

Still same problem, so i did some digging and found this post:

Also my car always stuttered when starting from either 1st or 2nd gear, no biggie.

So i figured lets order a new sachs clutch and have it replaced.

While the clutch was out i saw that the disc had worn the pressure plate, therefore i needed a new clutch, perfect its right here already!

I was extremely lucky my flywheel was almost perfect! Great! 1000$ saved! :)

While the tranny was out i inspected the inside and saw the guide bushing looked old and finished! BMW part number 23117564680 !

Thanks to this forum i was able to order the piece from the stealer for 12$ :) The Result, no more stuttering! Drives like a new one!

My mechanic also realised that my crackshaft seal was finished and started leaking oil, no problem 70$ later i got a new one put in, problem

is that you needed to remove the flywheel and you needed a special torx 60 tool but he had it.

The car put back together and it drives like a new one!!! Here are the pics!

A good friend of mine is selling his E60 M5 so he has a few parts up for sale. All the parts have been on the car for less than $10,000 miles and they are in excellent condition. A description of the parts, price and pictures are posted below.

Section 3 Meisterschaft GT2 exhaust: price = $1,500 (he paid over $3000 for it)

Section 2 Supersprint X-pipe (resonator delete): price = $450 (msrp $1000)

Section 1 Meisterchaft GT2 exhaust (straight pipes, no cats): price = $550 (Retails at over $1100)

BMC Air Filter: brand new still in the box. Price =$100 (msrp $200 + shipping)

2 Vibrant secondary catalytic converters: barely used. Price = $100 (msrp $200 + shipping)

This exhaust system has an absolutely intoxicating sound and I would keep it myself if I didn't have one on my car already. I need all the parts gone so I am willing to give away the full exhaust for $2200 or everything for $2300. Although local pickups would be preferred, I don't want them in my garage and would be willing to ship.
If you need any sound clips let me know but this is hands down one of the best sounding exhausts for the E60!!

Transmission Rattle update

So I posted a while back about a transmission rattle/ vibration but it was very faint and rare. This issue has become more frequent and more apparent- I also captured a video so you can hear it first hand.

The rattle/vibration is in gear above 50 mph when I lift off the throttle. Accelerating and pushing in the clutch make the rattle/vibration go away. Any ideas?

650i Gran coupe with M6 engine?

Heard a strange story today and wanted to see if anyone else has heard of this

a guy I work with bought his wife a 650i gran coupe with the M sport package (trim, wheels, etc - not M engine)

the car was burning through oil (not abnormal during break in) but the guy felt something was wrong-

he takes it to the dealership and one of the service techs tells him the car has the M engine- and it must have been dropped in by accident

is this possible? has anyone heard of a M engine accidentally being dropped in a non M car?

I know they just started introducing the M sport packages- are the M's finished in the same place as non M's? thought i would post this and get your thoughts

So I'm selling my car but I left the option to trade in open for now, just to see what dealers would offer me. I was shocked to find that most dealers are saying wholesale value of the car is only 20k, and RETAIL is only $25k!!! WTF?!!

Does this seem way too low to everyone else? We all know what E60s are selling for, and I understand that trade in value is much lower than private sale, but 25k? Are you freaking kidding me? This also makes it difficult to sell privately b/c people look at kbb, and tell you you're asking too much and they move on.

Notchy gear shifts

I've recently noticed that gear changes sometimes feel a bit more notchy than usual. There's a slightly "metallic" feeling to it when it happens, but no crunching. The gearbox is also noisy (rattling) on idle in neutral.

Should I be concerned about this? Time to change the oil or check the level?

How are these ACS Type III a 3 piece wheel?

Rear subframe clunk (which bushings to change)?

Front nose bushing, #6, is completely gone on my new 60k mile Alpine White M5 :ooohhh: It is to the point were I can simply push up on it from under the car!!

My question is: Is it recommended to change the two rear bushings, # 9, while the diff is out? They do not seem to be in bad shape, though. Also, what about the four subframe bushings, #2? All my research shows that these bushings do not really wear out.

Revs hang just before idle

I searched this and couldn't find any instance that was similar to mine. People had their hangups at much higher RPM's but I notice mine right around idle. I don't know if it is normal as I haven't paid attention to it until now.

What I see is that the engine seems to hang around 700 RPM and then drop down to the 600 RPM idle. I have a video of this showing the cluster's electronic reading as well as the gauge.

Black Kidney grills

Currently my car is black sapphire, may be wrapping it matte grey down the road. I have two questions:

1.) If I do wrap it, I will put matte black kidney grills on it. Are there good third party fitment options out there? Or is it better to make the OEM grill matte? Also, how does the matte black grill look on a sapphire black car, just incase I don't end up wrapping it but get the matte black grill beforehand?

2.) If I don't end up wrapping it I was thinking of going with a black sapphire grill that matches the current paint of the car. Does anyone have any pictures of a setup like this? Did you paint over the OEM grill?

Oil level reading

Yesterday I was flipping through the bc button and noticed the oil level was blank showing no oil level. I then looked at the vehicle info section in the I drive and under oil it said something along the lines of "oil reading unavailable at this time". Checked it again this morning and found the same thing. Anyone else ever experience this?

I've got an Android Samsung Galaxy phone and a 2007 M6. This year car doesn't have A2DP in the bluetooth. This means I couldn't just turn on bluetooth on my phone and play the hundreds of mp3's from my phone, through the car's radio. This year only has an aux plug in the center console. I have been using a double ended cable from the aux input to the phone. This was a functional solution but caused many problems.

I would have to dig up this cable each time I get in to the car. I cannot leave it plugged in when I make a stop, because the static could cause blown speakers and I didn't want to tempt any thieve from looking for electronics. also, I had to prop open my console slightly to avoid crushing the cable. All-in-all a work around to a better solution.

So I was very happy when I found this on Amazon.

It was simple to pair with my phone and is small enough so sits neatly, out of the way, on the aux plug in my console. No problem transimitting though the closed console. When I get out of my car, for a quick stop, it is very simple to reconnect to this device with
a few swipes.

The sound is good. I wouldn't say Bose stereo good, but pretty freakin good stereo sound. Yesterday I went for a 70 mile drive and the charge on this little guy lasted the whole day. Another good feature is that I can pair to both this unit and the car at the same time. That means music is pumped through this device and any calls that come through properly get sent directly to the M6 handsfree phone speakers. Android neatly pauses the music, when call comes in.

I've read good and bad things about these devices, but so far I'm really liking this. It is an inexpensive and awesome solution to an ongoing problem.

M5 gas saving

I know this has been on the board for discussion but id like some feedback. i know that an m5 isn't a gas saving car and if you wanted to save gas the m5 isn't for you. but those of you who dont push the car all day everyday, driving it normally, what settings have you used, what mods do you have, what mpg are you getting to maybe get gas savings? im getting 10-12 around the city with slow moving traffic and getting 17-19 open road highways. i have full rpi exhaust and ecu tune. what else have you guys done to maximize performance and gas mileage?

I am rebuilding the transmission in my 1991 M5 I have all the parts except for a the "Cover" its an end cap seal.
Not available in North America at the time and BMW says it will only be available at the end of the year!
I want to drive this car now! I had a set of ground control coil overs made for the car. the M5 is up on stands ready for everything to be put back together. My EVOLVE-R Tune E60 ///M5 Review!!

Just uploaded the Evolve-R Tune for my E60 M5 today. Service was great and everything was super easy to use. The software was simple and the turnaround time was great.

Only mods I have are Charcoal Filter deletes, RPi Scoops, Block Plates, BMC Filters, and Straight Pipes. 91 Octane.

I had a Euro SMG Flash done to my car that made shifts much smoother and gave me 4,100rpm Launch Control. I was worried the Evolve Tune might get rid of that but Sal confirmed it doesn't, which was true.

My software was dated so they sent me an update along with the new tune. Long story short, I turned the car on after the update then uploading the DME and instantly felt a difference. Throttle response is drastically better. No more "lag" in low RPM's. It just takes off with ease even in partial throttle. Like everyone says, P400 mode feels VERY alive. P500 is ridiculous and M mode turns into MONSTER mode. The car just wants to go, both partial and full throttle. The car actually drives much smoother with the juddering almost completely gone. A very nice bonus to the added power. Speed Limiter was removed so its nice to know you can keep going past 155mph all the way to 205mph if you really wanted to. Let's be honest... 155mph comes real quick in our M5's. It always irked me to know I was limited.

8,600rpm redline is crazy, although I've only taken it up there once after the tune. I've put on about 60 miles so far and it feels really good. I believe they recommend putting 50-100 miles for the car to fully adapt so I'll see if it keeps getting better with more miles.

In short, I HIGHLY recommend this mod. For $1k, it's a no brainer imo. It turns your already fast M5 into an even faster more responsive machine. Car definitely accelerates harder and climbs speed faster.

SMG Hydraulic Pump Part #

Hi all,

Does anyone know the part number for the HYDRAULIC PUMP? My SMG electric motor recently failed and I ordered a new set. Now the pump isn't working properly. Apparently it begins to pump but then slows down. With the previous motor back in, it just doesn't pump at all so that motor was definitely dead; now this seems to be a follow-on issue.

Here's a pic from realoem:

the hydraulic pump is inside the highlighted red rectangular block with the 4 holes on the side. That's the part that I need (well, the pump that is contained inside it).

to the LEFT of that block and pump are two horizontal cylinders: the bottom is the pressure accumulator (23017838933) which I know you can order separately, and above that is the electric motor which I have already replaced (thinking that was the culprit).

I can't find a part number for the HYDRAULIC PUMP itself and can't afford another $3k for another hydraulic unit again. PLEASE PLEASE help :(

Drag Radials for a 20" tire?

Do they make drag radials for a 20" tire. Back when I had my twin turbo super I would always run 275 17's in the rear with nitto drag radials. It barely rains here in SoCal so it was perfect. Im thinking when my hankooks give out maybe its worth getting some drag radials for pretty much the best traction you can get on the street other than slicks.

Recently I've found EFREN Cold Ram Air Intake system on ebay ~$1520. It shows dyno results as Gains = +32.58 wHP and +19.82 wTQ.
I think it's worth the price. I appreciate your opinions.

I'm thinking about doing a carbon hood, and or a gloss black roof. Curious if you guys have any opinions (I know you will) or pictures to help me decide.

I was going to start with just a wrap, then in time do a proper hood upgrade.

But heres a start.

I want to do this on my '06 Sepang. Stock suspension with 20' Cor Ciphers (gloss black barrell and gunmetal centers). Tinted windows, back kidney and side grilles.

Firstly, thanks for such an informative forum. I've trawled through a bundle of threads with well informed and helpful posts already. :cheers:
Having said that, I'm still in trouble. :dunno: I'd very much appreciate your help!

So, I have an S62 in my E30 which I've been picking away at for the last year and a half. Long story short, it's got a terrible rattle which only becomes apparent when the engine is warm and the car is driven. The rattle occurs only under light throttle load. Without any load (revving the engine with the car not moving) it sounds perfect. I've tested-replaced a good few things including vanos seals and big end shells (which had spun) and all sensors etc check out ok on INPA, although (obviously) the knock sensors are going mental! If anything, it seems to have got a little quieter the more the engine has been run, but it's still by no means a good noise!

If it was an engine from my youth (i.e, old and simple) I'd swear that it was pre-ignition.

It would be great to get a suggestion or two before I start tearing the motor down! :biggrin:

Back in early 2000 the previous owner installed a full sachs suspension sport springs n shocks all around, I remove those worn out shocks during my ownership and replace just the shocks with bilsteins on all corners. I recently replaced shock mounts at front. The SLS was capped but all parts still attached to car. Ive checked some M5 threads and am aware on some of the .. kinks .. the car has. I think its an 3.6 and as you can see, its a "bit" roughed up. I think it eats too much oil. A quart per 900mi is a lot imho. I dont mind the rattyness as far as the mechanical stuff is ok.

Since we are buying an M5 im asking you guys to help us find the right one ;) I hope im not asking too much here. And while on the subject of buying, our budget is 8-9k. If that's unrealistic please point it out. Thanks.

Unfortunately this copy contains no links or photos. The referenced threads are not in my possession. There is work ongoing to establish a standalone Koenigsegg forum on which the Registry will reappear. I will communicate updates on the status of this work as appropriate.

This Registry means a lot to me personally. When I started it in April of 2009 there was no one in the world attempting to catalog and track Koenigsegg cars. This is the original, authentic article, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

But it was not just me -- many people had a hand in building the Registry into what it became. I've always appreciated and credited these contributions.

I assure you that one way or the other this Registry will continue on, I expect in an even better form than it was previously. But for those who have missed it as much as (or even more than) I have, at least I hope you will find this copy useful for reference for the time being.

Hello All I am trying to locate M5 killer Rojo. I paid him for a set of Alpina B10 Biturbo wheels and Tires and two front calipers over a year and half ago. Then he went MIA. I cannot get in touch with him through any of the contact information I have for him. The last time I communicated with him he ask me to be patient with him as he was having so personal issue and could not get to the stuff which was at his home. I hope all is ok with him. If any one can get in touch with him for me please have him contact me in regards to the parts to arrange shipment. We had develop a good relationship speaking weekly.

Front tyre recommendation

Im planning in the future to get PSS on the back
Its stock stock stock at the moment as Ive just recently bought it.

Future plans:
Spacers and drop it on the front only with springs in the future...

Does anyone have any suggestions on the front tyres for now ?

Clear Bra Hood Coverage

I got the front of my car re-sprayed recently due to an 18 wheeler kicking up rocks and damaging my windshield on the way back from MFest. So I have two choices. I am getting the front bumper covered, but am stuck between 24" or 18" coverage from the leading edge of the hood. It's a $50 difference between the two. 24" would be half of the hood while 18" would be a little less. What would you guys go with?

24" hood coverage= $395
18" hood coverage= $325
Whole front bumper= $525

I was originally planning on doing the whole hood but that won't include the tips of the fenders and I would need to do each fender separately at a cost of $325 each. The cost goes up significantly. So this is out of the question I just posted costs for reference.

Whole hood= $525 (not including fender tips)
Each whole fender= $325
Whole front bumper=$525

Need help with replacing a stripped 11mm nut on hard brake line

Hi All:

I have a stripped 11mm nut on my front right hard brake line :grrrr: so I can't change the flex line that goes to the caliper on that corner.

My plan is to buy a tube flaring kit, cut the flared end off, replace the stripped nut (with the protruding threads) and then double flare the tube using the kit.

I looked in realoem and can't find a part number for just the 11mm nut. Is my only option to buy a section of hard brake line that already has the nut and cut it off?

Vibration after new center tie rod and ends

Last week I replaced my center tie rod and both tie rod ends. I also replaced the idler arm (the one with the bushing on the passenger's side) and the sway bar bushings. I had a creaking noise that started after the car was warm due to a bad ball joint on the center. That problem was solved. However, I now get a pretty good vibration at different speeds mostly above 60 mph. The vibration feels like an out of balance tire. After I did this work I had the car aligned and then put on a new set of tires. The vibration is still there. It smooths out when I'm accelerating but is bad when I am decelerating while in gear or neutral. There isn't a rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes it will do it when I'm cruising at 80 and sometimes not. It seems to do it worse if I'm driving aggressively. The shaking is felt kind of in the steering wheel, not violently, and some at my feet and seat (not to be too vague).

When doing the aforementioned work my torque wrench broke. I tightened down all bolts, with a breaker bar, as tight as I could. Can you tighten them too much?

So I have a 545 e60 in Orientblau metallic and I love the colour, but my dream colour has always been AW with gloss black roof. Now Im thinking if I have some spare cash in the next months to paint it white, but if I�m going to be painting it a brand new colour then why not go with something someone hasn�t done before.

Now Im interesed in what you would do if you could pick any colour for your m5, and it doesnt have to be a BMW colour (like Gunther for example: lamborghini white) what would you pick?

I've read a couple post of members upgrading to this 3.62 diff. but none of them has shared information on the drive shaft if it has to modified to fit.

From what ive gathered, it seems like the back cover need to be swapped to the e39 one and the front bolt hole need to be modify.

Could some share some more light on this, on what exactly is needed to throw this diff in an e39.

I was just wondering what the difference is between the ecu tune and smg tune. most tuning companies are offering both separately. wouldn't the ecu tune maximize and make the smg tranny more efficient anyways? love to hear some feedback and first hand experience.

Hey guys,

I recently acquired this E61 M5 touring. I have really been enjoying it. Got one lap on the ring with her so far. :)

Anyways, I have never been able to keep any of my cars in their stock form for very long so thought that I would put a few minor touches into this beast as well.

This car is amazing! Bought it new in March 2007 and got over 100,000 miles out of the brakes! Like Christmas morning every time I step into the car. Had the brakes replaced locally by a shop I've used for years (since the cars out of warranty!). Used all OEM BMW replacement parts and ready to go another 100,00 miles!

OEM Wheel Widths?

I've just discovered something a bit strange about F06/F10/F12/F13 wheel widths.

In the official BMW M6 pricing guide, the 343M wheels are described as being 20x9.0 and 20x10.0 (Part Nos 36112284450 & 36112284451). The 433M standard GC wheels are described as being 20x9.5 and 20x10.0 (Part Nos 36112283402 & 36112283403).

However, when I phoned the parts dept of my local BMW dealer, their system shows the respective front and rear wheel widths of BOTH the 343M AND 433M styles for the F06 GC/F12/F13 applications as being 20x9.5 (ET31) and 20x10.5 (ET19).

I wonder which of these sources contains the correct information?

{As an interesting aside, for the F10 M5 application the front and rear 343M wheels widths are 1/2" narrower @ 20x9.0 (ET34) and 20x10.0 (ET34), with Part Nos 36112283999 & 36112283401, but possibly with a different Part No (36112283400) for the F10 M5 fronts when equipped with M Carbon Ceramic Brakes? (but still 20x9.0 and ET34)}

ok during Timmayfest I had a discussion with Mike Adam and Rob about what I should go with for replacements to my stock struts/springs. Originally I was considering getting ST coilovers but they had convinced me I should go with Dinan struts/springs.

then later that day Peter chimed in and sad I need to go with Ground Control coilovers.

my current suspension setup is: Dinan rear sway bar, thrust arm mono balls, control arm mono balls stock springs and struts.

what I want: lower stance, improved handling, and ride quality as close to stock as possible.

give me your thoughts, and if anyone in the Chicago area has GC coilovers I would love to go for a ride to see how it is.

Oil Level Indication

OK, I know about the oil level indicator in the dash. It doesn't monitor oil as you drive but when parked on the level and idling. Push the BC button and after the clock symbol, the level shows up. That's nice, but does something monitor oil level automatically to let you know what the level is doing over time? I did see in the manual that I-drive gives an indication both at idle (a minute or so) and when driving (5 minutes or so), but apparently you have to ask it. Not having a dip stick, I do like to know my oil level when traveling and pushing the engine hard. Will I-drive do this as I drive (no pun intended!). Recently, I took a 150-mile trip and wanted to know the level at my destination. The dash indicator said minimum, so I added a half-quart. Then when arriving home, I let the car sit for a half-hour and did the BC thing when idling. It showed Max, so I needn't have added oil. I don't want to overfill. Is there an oil pressure warning light when things get dangerous?

My First Track Day

I had my first official track day at Barber Motorsports in Leeds Alabama. This track is so beautiful and challenging it mesmerizes you in every way. It was such a blast! Thanks to my mentors the Locklears I was prepared for the track. I had the RPI Exhaust, air intakes, and RD Sport sway bars installed. I also bought the 18� Apex wheels that Keith had suggested with Continental R compounds. Doing it right the first time has me hooked! I was able to hunt down and pass the new M5. What a rush! The only one I had trouble with was the GT500 Cobra Mustang but I was able to pass him once. Keep in mind we were all beginners just trying not to crash our cars. I�m already thinking about what�s the next mod. The Locklears have cost me a lot of money and I�m loving it! LOL

Homelink range??

This is the first BMW I've ever owned. Something that I find disappointing is the range of the Homelink and the key fob remote.

I've had Homelink on my last several cars. The range always seemed to be about 200-300 feet to get the garage door to open. With this car, I have to pull right up to the garage door, and it sometime takes several presses of the button to get it to open or close. This thing seems to have absolutely no range at all. Is there something that can be done to improve the range of this device?

Regarding the key fob, I basically have to be standing right at the front door of the car to get it to lock or unlock by pressing the button. It won't even lock or unlock standing right next to the passenger door. The battery is almost brand new.

Is there something in settings or another fix for these items to extend the range? This has been the biggest frustration with this car...other than the satelite radio going in and out any time I'm nearing any tree.

Peak code 81

So my car a 02 model year went into limp mode with no revs past 3k and kicked 5 codes on the peak reader after getting it back on the road from a clutch/ flywheel resto. Codes 25, 26, 27 and 28 along with code 81. The exhaust on this car is 100% factory and the passenger-side cat was replaced sometime before I bought it, that being said it had half a dozen pin hole leaks as well as cracked O2 sensor bungs on both front sensors that I sealed up. I searched code 81 on here and found some useful info -- check the secret menu tests 6 and 14, here is what I got:
Test 6: ~ quarter of a tank of fuel
0.0/ 14.5L/ 14.5L
Test 14: same fuel level
DIAG 1 D7 81 000
DIAG 2 8B 84 000
DIAG 3 92 84 000
DIAG 4 CE 81 000
DIAG 5 C7 81 000

Now from what I read here http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39...de-81-a-3.html even though the one tank shows empty it seems like the secondary fuel pump is working?? but the DIAG test 1 indicates D7 which I read is the SecFPump failure. Can anyone verify I'm backwards here and the pump needs replaced? I have a new fuel filter to put in since god only knows when the last time the current ones been done.
I'm thinking/ hoping that the filter may be partially clogged resulting in the 4 codes for the O2 sensors triggered by the DME due to the 81 code and catalyst protection engagement. Otherwise I'll have to order a fuel pump and dive into the tank.
All help/ advice is appreciated,
