I recently installed a CNS Racing exhaust on my E39 and it sounds awesome! In fact, last weekend I was at the Targa Trophy rally with a bunch of BMW, Ferrari, Porshe and Lambo fanatics and received multiple compliments, including from folks with other exhaust systems installed. Just my opinion - you can check them out at:

http://www.cnsracing.com

Here are some links where you can hear it in action:

YouTube - E39 M5 CNS Racing Exhaust Cold Start Rev Up

YouTube - E39 M5 CNS Racing Power Exhaust System

Good Luck!

I have been happy with the one I installed on my M5 in June, but I have to say that I don't drive the car on a daily basis. You will certainly know that it's there and I think that it is more noticeable when the car is cold and when accelerating under load, but it is hardly noticeable at cruise speeds. When you stomp on it it sounds awesome and I have gotten tons of compliments on it. You might want to contact CNS and see if they have one installed in your area that you could listen to, otherwise, just check out the links in my above post. Good luck!

Sorry for not mentioning it and yes I have the X pipe installed and in my opinion it's worth the added cost.
