The engine is a masterpiece I am sure, but the whole car just looks like a pimped out boy racer. This is not a car for me. What happened to form follows function? I hope BMW gets their designs ironed out before the next generation is launched.

You're absolutely right. I have no doubt this will be an amazing car to drive, but it looks like it's trying to hard. M:s have always managed to balance understated power with amazing handling, but this.. I don't know.

Simple put, yes it looks fast, but where's the class?

I strongly feel BMW are catering to a larger "mass-market" with this new model, whilst M-aficionados will be pushed to the CSL range instead. I had a lot of expectations on this car, but to me it seems it's only going to match the RS4, not set a new milestone in the segment..

I've just quickly run the figures and unlimited the E90 M3 should achieve 302 km/h at 8300rpm in 6th gear.

Is air resistance included in that calculation, or are we talking theoretical top speed?

Just the gearing. Most M-cars up to now seem to be capable of running into the rev limiter.

Well, since the R8 with the same power is good for 300+ I guess that power shouldn't be an issue.. you might need a long straight, but eventually you'd be up there I'd say..!

The E30 M3 was anything but understated. I see the E92 M3 as returning to it roots. The regular E90/92 is such a non-muscular blob that keeping the M3 understated would have resulted in, well, a blob with better performance. Just my opinion.

New M3 the UK Press Release

The pictures are the same as those in the first post in this thread.

This is the official UK press release, the facts are the same but the wording is more English English.

It's really diffcult to beat the E39M5. Perhaps it's my age or 'time' speaking, but I've always had the impression that the E39 M5 is going to do down in automotive history as one of, if not THE, most 'all around' perfect example of 'CAR'...ever made.

To me, everything since then...has been a letdown. I really don't mind the look of this newer M3, but if I decided I had to buy an M3, it would still be the E46. Then I'd mod it...just a touch. I also suspect that I'm simply not the target market.
