Do we need a V8 in the new M3

Do we want an V8 in the new m3/M4

The m3 started as nice handling little car the E30 and did very well in motorsports with 4 cilinder
Do we really need a V8 in the new m3 /M4 as rumoured.

I rather have the CSL engine and new shape model 100 kg lighter body. Rather than a bigger and heavier car wich compensate the weight with more hp in case of a V8

BMW makes cars bigger and bigger and heavier and heavier and try to compensate with more HP and torque.

Look at 5 series now it s as big as a 7 serie few years back.
It goes the same way with the 3 series.

I don t want an almost m5 when i buy M3. I want an M3 with motorsport capabilities like the old times the E30 M3

I have the models on 1.18 scale on my desk.

E30 m3 / e36 m3 /e46 m3 i am watching them right now if i look at them closely i get scared when i think about it when the new model m3/m4 comes our way. Why: Bigger bulkey and havier bigger engine the wrong way around in my opinion.

Like to know youre opinion on this issue.

Well I was gonna talk about this...I just worgot it
I think that there is no need to go for a V8, they could make a "small" 4L V8 with 400bhp but still wont make me forget the I-6!
Why dont they make a 3.6L I-6 with the some bhp/L scale as the CSL? That would make 405BHP!!!

I just hate the ideia of not having a I-6 engine on the M cars....

There is no reason that a V8 need to be heavier, look at the S62 (M5) engine, just a couple of kg heavier than the S54.

Also there is very difficult to make an I6 engine with even more power reliable due to strains on the long crankshaft.

Cheers,
/Johan

I think the new M1 will get a l6

M1 = l6
M3/4 = V8
M5 = V10

If only the M6 would get a V12

BMW is well known for their in-line 6 engines, and I believe they should continue building I-6 engines for M powered cars. But at the same time it doesn’t mean they shouldn't build V8 or even V12 M cars (remember the McLaren F1 )

Regarding the weight issue, BMW is always striving to reduce the weight of their cars. They are using more aluminum than ever before, and I recently read in a car magazine that they even signed a contract with a carbon fiber manufacturer that will supply them with parts for their future models.

Regarding also the S54 (M3) engine it is only slightly less heavy than the S62 (M5) engine only because it has an iron block instead of an aluminum block. (M5).

In the end I would rather have an I-6 engine for the M3/M4 rather than a V8, but again we can only judge after driving the new car!

Andre,

First of all I must agree with HIPAD and Johann. A 4.0L V-8 would be even lighter than present I-6 since due it is iron block; on the other hand V-8 can be alum. thus lighter even with 2 more cylinders and more displacement.
Don't forget that even at 8000 rpm, stroke of E46 M3's engine travels more distance than Ferrari's V-8 at 8500 rpm per minute due to longer stroke.
So a V-8 in an M4/M3 would be a screamer at 8500-9000 with more torque than present engine.

So since a small displacement V-8 would be lighter, has more torque, more hp, and revs harder & more, I see no reason not to want a V-8 under the hood.

As you know, the M Division's approach has been the normally aspirated way so far, although they themselves admit that with the latest force induction technology, it is becoming more and more of a philosophical choice...
