SMG = M Division, designed by Siemens, 6-speed and the 'better' sequential automated gearbox.
SSG = non-M division cars, 5 speed initiially, designed by Magneti Marelli? Not so enthusiast oriented.
The above thoughts on SSG may have changed with the 2003-2004 cars. Someone in Europe may have more info.
I believe SSG will be smoother as well. SMG, although it does offer an option of Automated shifting, still shifts like a manual. SSG should be smoother. I'm sure that can't be bad...

big 6,
I know that many will not agree with the following statement but what the hell:
"Do not in any substantial way equate the SMG II gearbox with an Automatic gearbox. It is just a VERY smart manual gearbox that happens to relieve the driver of the clutch engaging/dis-engaging functions of your left foot/leg, and happens to have some fairly useful 'automatic' modes. Every other function resembles a 'true' manual gearbox. (It is in fact the same Getrag transmission that's in the E46 except for the associated SMG II hard/software). IMHO the future of manual transmissions as will be evidenced soon by every major manufacturer of high performance cars".
