Which Exhaust On E46 M3??

So I'm curious which exhaust you have on your E46 M3.
Eisenmann and Supersprint are being the most populers; now there is also UUC Motorwerks.

Actually I'm very impressed by the lightnest of Eisenmann Titanium exhaust; being only 17 lbs. Stock exhaust should be around 50 lbs.
I used to have a supersprint muffler and resonator on my M3 EVO. On supersprint catalogue, rear muffler showed only 3 hp increase where the resonator actually decrease the torque on their before/after dyno graph. On the other hand on the same catalogue supersprint rear muffler + resonator gave approx. 12 hp on Z3 M coupe.

In Turnermotorsport site, it says eisenmann and supersprint rear mufflers give approx. 7-8 hp at the crank.
Has any one had a before/after dyno runs?? Because I don't believe 7-8 hp increase is possible on E46 M3 just from an exhaust. Supersprint has only 3 hp over stock on M3 EVO and E46 M3's stock exhaust has 30% more flow over M3 EVO.

Actually I read on an american site that after they compare several exhausts on E36 M3, only 2 or 3 exhaust showed increase in power; supersprint was one of them. Most of them actually did decrease the power.

So what is your experience with your exhaust on your M3??

Onur,

I have the Eisenmann 76mm (round). I've decided that it's the optimum size and falls in between the stock ArvinMeritor 65mm and the Eisenmann 83mm. The 83mm looks too large in my opinion (too ricey!) and the sound of the 76mm and the 83mm are pretty much the same. The 83mm has also perforated resonators inside the tips that I didn't like. The Titanium one is too expensive in my opinion for a road M3.

In terrms of sound, it's much louder than the OEM and makes its presence heard. Especially, it screams under load. Which is not always a good thing in city driving but it's a choice one has to make. To appreciate it, you have to hear it from another car. Also, turns heads more as you drive around. Again, this has pros and cons. Long distance driving gets more tiring after a few hours as well.

One general problem with the Eisenmanns is that they resonate (or what ever you call that pirrr sound) between 2200-3000 RPMs. It's annoying and you want to stay out of those revs. But that's how they are and again a choice one has to make.

Overall, I'm quite happy and I would have made the same choice again for my conditions. On the other hand, the stock ArvinMeritor exhaust is also a brilliant piece of engineering developed to satisfy several constraints. Read the pdf in the hyperlink.

I have collected sound and video clips of different types of exhausts for the M3. I can email them to you if you like.

Cheers,

Ufuk

Thank you for the link Ufuk. I'll check it out.
How heavy is your eisenmann exhaust?

So glowrider has 83mm race type. Is it available with 76 mm tips? I downloaded the exhaust video on www.leo.nutz.de but it is hard to get the real sound of the car from the video. What is the weight of race exhaust?
I checked out eisenhaus.com but there I could only see the weight of the titanium exhaust.

Onur,

You know that in Europe there is only one type of Eisenmann which probably corresponds to the "race"type in the US. I believe the 76mm and the 83mm mufflers are the same with just different tail pipes. So, the difference is pretty much cosmetic. I respect the Glowrider and others who chose it since it's a matter of taste after all, but as I said before, IMO they are too big for a car the size of the M3. There sure must be an asthetic limit that gives the best proportions. Would we all choose 90mm or 100mm if there was one?

The Eisenmann dealer told me that the Eisenmann is about 10Kg lighter than the stock exhaust. Which nicely offsets the stereo system I'm adding for about the same weight.

Cheers,

Ufuk

Hi Ufuk,

I read the pdf file of arvinmeritor. I found it very interesting. They put a lot of hard work and technology in this exhaust system. After reading this now I'm 100% sure that it is not possible to get 7 more hp just from the muffler. However saving weight is another advantage especially with titanium eisenmann.

On the other hand these aftermarket exhaust systems make great sounds; I especially LIKE deeper, thoaratier and agressive sound.
Now have to talk with the dealer..
BTW, if I would buy an exhaust, I would also choose 76mm tips; either eisenmann race or supersprint.

Don't get an exhaust cause you think you're gonna get more power....you won't get nothing more than a marginal increase...Get it for the look and the sound...I'm very happy with mine.

Some people also talk about small loss of low-end power with aftermarket exhausts but I don't see how they measure it? Feelings are not always scientifically accurate

Cheers,

Ufuk

I agree with you. Well said. If you think that I'm a kind of person who is very suspecious about performance kits on cars such as Ferrari 355, 360, M3 EVO, E46 M3 (to make the list short, the cars with 100hp/L or more), I wouldn't ever put an exhuast for hp increase. I asked for dyno runs because I don't believe 7-8 hp increase just from a muffler.

On the other hand, a better sound could be an enough reason to put an aftermarket exhaust for me

Now just the warranty problems..
