Chop M5 for M3...

Guys,

I have been offered the chance to get out of my 06 M5 and into an 08 M3 (fully loaded) for no additional money.
Now the is a method to my madness...

The jist of it is that I am thinking ahead to when the new M5 appears in 2011 / 2012 I know I will want one.
My current M5 will then be 5/6 years old and pretty much worthless but a 08 M3 will still be a desireable trade in against the new M.

So what should I do? I like my car but the gearbox and the brakes bother me sometimes and I stress it would be a 'stop gap' for the new M5.

The M3 is apline white and fully loaded with 10k, my car is also fully loaded and has 27k.
Basically I can trade up 2 years for no outlay, which my head says is an extremely good deal.

Do it mate!!!

Listen to your mind, if you leave it too late it may go and you will kick your self for leaving it.

What is the spec, and also mileage of your M5 at the mo???

PS, OT: your in Ireland?? I just git back from Dublin, aweeeeeesome fun :D - Going to Limerick next month, cant wait! :7:

I say do it. It's a great deal.. good trade. Only one year, not bad at all.

The 06 M5 is old, and the new M3 is a new fun toy. Not nearly as fast, which you might miss.. but it's only for a year then you can jump into the TT V10 M5 (it better be)!

The 06MY M5 isnt THAT old but once the new M5 comes out then it will be very old and you will begin to have issues (how many miles you have).

It's only 1 year.. that's why I would do it. You will also have a more valuable/desirable car to trade with.. if you choose the new M5.

Have you taken it for a test drive??? I would most certainly do so if you really plan to buy it. Assuming you like the car after you drive it, I would give it a try. It may be worth more later, and also, I think it would be a fantastic car to try between M5s. Post pics if you go through with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GL

That's the car I was shopping for when I bought my M5 (used). The price difference was almost $10K last year. I think I am happier with the 5 than I would have been with the 3. However, given the chance I would do the swap you are contemplating, if only because I like driving different cars, a different car always is better for the first year even if a few little things are not perfect.

If your motive is to do it as a stopgap, I would def do it. The E60 will be a replaced box by then and the M3 will still be produced. You will get more for the M3 at that time. Also, it gives you chance to try something different fir a year or two. Go for it, it's just for a limited time. Imagine how fast the F10 will feel compared to the M3!

Good deal

This is a good deal and the prices for the 06 M5 will definitely go down, very soon they will be under
30k$ next year and for the M3 prices next year will be about 42k $ how I think. So you should do it.
The new M5 F10 with a twin turbo V10 :3: ( I hope so ) will be a great car.

Well guys, the deal is done...

I will sorely miss the 5 and I truely love it but as I have already said the long term aim is to prep for the next M5 in a few years.
In an ideal world I would keep her forever, but we dont live in one of those.
I have discussed it with all the friends etc and it would appear to be the best option.

I am looking forward to something a little different and love the growl of the V8.

The M5 is the 'daddy' it always was, and always will be, of that there is no doubt but in a few years I will be back in the saddle once again and in the mean time I can pose about in the M3 and sorch some of our Irish country roads that the M5 was a little to big and heavy for.

I will keep you posted and will post pics when I get her.

Did you get an M3 coupe or sedan?

Sorry Gustav and co just came across my old thread and realised I never did post the pics of the car up.

Know I know you are going to ask so I might as well give a review now, car is very good - has not given the slightest bit of trouble since I got it.
Lovely V8 rumble enhanced by a BMC filter, lowered on Eibachs and running 15mm spacers all round - and no it does not rub at all!

Good points vs M5 are,

gearbox but only sometimes, I miss the SMG even though it used to piss me off sometimes.
Looks, car looks really well and get lots of comments in comparsion to my old M5.
Comfort access is great and highly recommended.
Brakes although not AP's are much better and a lot sharper.
Car does not burn oil at all, had to top up the day after I got it as the dealer sent it out low on oil but thats it.
No creaks or rattles at all, the M5 suffers from this.
Wheels are much easier to clean.
EDC makes car super stiff on the hardest setting, it seems to work better across comfort / normal & sport.

Bad points vs M5 are,

Comfort, car is no where near as comfortable or as big inside
SMG - yes yes I know, but you too would miss those downshifts.
No sunroof, small but I miss it and would rather a sunroof than a carbon roof.
The roar, man I miss the roar. I still get a tingle down my spine thinking if it and the topgear video just when you see the rev counter needle swinging round...
Active seats, these were a great option on the M5 and are also missed.
HUD it took quite a while to get used to not having the HUD proving it to be a great M5 trait.
Out right punch, see below.
Stability at high speed sucks, car feels very nervous and it stays right up to big speed.
Now when I had my M5 I had a few runs at a friend in his TVR and the two cars were very evenly matched to approx 150mph. Now we all know the V8 M3 is a slower car but Im not sure how much slower...I have had a few runs at the same friend in the same car and although I had to drive the M3 really hard I matched him every bit as well as I did in the M5. I cant explain it and I know it will be a topic of debate but thats just how it panned out, and no his car was running fine just the same as before.
I dont think the M3 is as slow as people make it out to be...

However more importantly than all of this is the fact that I am here posting this, cant believe the amount on new members since I was on here daily! you are all very lucky.
I am strongly considering getting out of the 3 again because it simply does not feel special enough. It is a great car but when I got out of my 5 I looked back thinking 'wow' what a car, the 3 just does not give the same kicks imo.
Have considered many options but will keep for another thread.

Anyway enough waffle, time for some pics...
