Biggest diff. you will find is the lack of torque in the M3....from a standing start up to 60/70 the M5 should give a good account for itself...but after that the M3 just pulls away.
I have a coupe so I cant comment on the room available in the sedan vs. the E39.
Regards
S

Check out www.drivers-republic.com very good long term tests and updates on both cars by very good/qualified journalists.

Yes, I had an E39 M5 for 88k miles. I now have an E90 M3 sedan to replace it. I love the new M3 but I believe that the E39 M5 was one of the greatest cars BMW has ever designed. It was sturdier and has a touch more room. It seemed obviously heavier and more solid in every way. It did seem to have a nice amount of torque down low but the M3 manual I have has just as much I think. The M3 is the only car that closely approximates the E39 M5 and that's why I bought it. I love my manual sedan and as Car & Driver put it, "the manual M3 is probably the best car in the world". You should drive them both. Both phenomenal cars!
