K&N Filters - Do NOT do this mod

'07 M6 Cab - 1400 miles - 1st service done - S6 & LC available.

I removed the charcoal filters about 10 days ago and was amazed at the improvement this gave the car - increased crispness, little bit nicer sound, etc. (this is fairly well accepted and discussed on this forum as standard procedure). However, I decided to order a pair of K&N filters (part 33-2352 and 33-2350) from the K&N homepage (listed for M6). Well....this evening I replaced the stock filters with the K&N filters (no problem with install..10minutes at best) and took the car for a little drive. Whoa...the car felt muffled and muted...all the improvements from the charcoal filter removal gone!! So I put the stock filters back and everything's back to normal. This was very surprising and perplexing.

So, I'm sorry for K&N that in my subjective opinion this is a mod best avoided for this car. Although it really does'nt make alot of sense. K&N filters are very good, and I have had K&N's on many other cars (e39 M5, CTS-V, Benz, Ferrari 512/355) and have almost universally noticed an improvement so I am a little bit perplexed why they did'nt seem to work out for the M6??? Any thoughts would be enlightening. Thanks. Nigel.

Nigel,
Could they have been too heavily oiled fresh out of the box such that air flow was restricted? Is this even possible? Maybe it might have gotten better after some of the 'excess' oil had evapourated?
Regardless, after reports of K+N filters fouling the MAF's in the E39 M5, this is a mod I would never do anymore.

I have the K&N in my M6 and noticed only slight improvement nothing dramatic, but it certainly did not feel slugish definite slight improvement. Although it seemed harder to get the airbox clips back on with the K&N I am not sure why.

Thanks all. Deknight, I also definitely had a harder time getting the airboxes closed with the K&N's in too. Actually to the point that I was concerned the boxes were not sealed. Nontheless, given the aparent decrease in performance feel and all the aforementioned risks.....the K&N's went into the trash (along with my $90) today.

Some mods are good, some are not so good. We only learn by trying. This is what this board is for.

Hi there, the same here.
I got my M6 in November 2006 and immediately installed the k&N airfilters, same product codes, and I can say that I have not noticed any real improvement, but a little bit louder induction noise compared to standard.
I have kept them in for this reason only, and becau se for some reason I have been doing this to all the cars that I got so far.
By the way, I had the DMS ecu upgrade and it works wonders. You can easily feel at least 30-35bhp improvement.

Nigel:

Great to hear that you are still around and enjoying the cars. Hope all is well in VA. This new V10 is a hard engine to figure out and is very tempemental. I would think that your box wasnt sealed or was leaking at a point. That is the only real thing I could see happening to casue such a loss of power. That being said, I think the KN are pretty muhc useless on such a car. How do you like the M6 Cab overall?

TCM - Good to hear from you. I've been reading many wise posts from you. So far (1 month and 1400mi), m6 is going strong. I've ordered the eisenmann meistershaft exhaust w/ carbon tips, although I already know its going to be too loud, I have to see that for myself. Too bad, I can't bring the car up to you and your dad for install of the exhaust when it comes in 6 weeks or so. Do you do housecalls?? Just kidding. Hope to see you soon. Nigel.
