I am back to BMW after 19 months with 2006 Porsche C2S. That was my third and probably last Porsche..... New M6 is Sapphire Black with black Merino leather, HUD, and all the trimming. It is much improvement from my 2003 e39 M5 for riding comfort and SMG is also much better than I expected, especially compared to 1st generation M3 SMG I had with 2003. My wife actually like the car and my twins love the spacious back seats.
Spectacular upon arrival and my dealer gave me a very fair trade for the well-kept 11 year old Jag XJ12 LWB. This M6 is the only thing that could pry the magnificent old Jag out of my garage..and I looked endlessly -- even tempted by a V8 Vantage -- but no go -- thankfully. At the price it needed something more than a Jag-derived lump in front.
My M6:
Alpenwhite Coupe, SMG
Black Full Merino, Carbon Fiber -- Then every conceivable option save soft close doors --wanted but couldn't wait. Also no TV (USA no-no) --nav, Sat radio, CD changer.
Still trying to work out a front plate mount, not a fan of the US standard mount -- disrupts the beautiful nose -- will post photos shortly if I succeed
Reading all the mag and related reviews and etc, I find most to be crybabies little aware of the spectacular long-term life with an M6. Supercar fast with the BMW service and warranty -- and for 1/3 the price of some justabitquicker maranello aluminium. Except no $15,000 first tuneup and no $10,000 F1 clutch at 12k miles. Why invite that punishment even if super rich? And, thought I might loathe the iDrive, it is easily mastered -- but you must spend time in the car -- not an afternoon road testing for Kelley Blue Book.
Sorry to ramble -- new to the site but in utter rapture with a dream automobile and I have had pretty near the lot in my motoring history. This one does it all.

But the F's have finally moved on from belts to chains .
Your post highlights the little secret that F-car owners don't want to discuss -- til' they put 'em up for sale out of sheer disgust, lol.
Thanks on the M6- I am just ecstatic and just dialed it past 3200 miles--Hoooo.
-- yes the F-cars have got it right now but the belts were divorce-makers. 1st 308 cost me over $6k for the 15k service, engine-out cam belts and fact'y req'd updates (not covered but required). Heard the belts were an issue so I ordered the 30k svc. knowing that the valves would not be happy without cams driving them. This was in 1979!! Pity the fool -- much loved F-car went to consignment immediately and did I get an earful the next 25 years. Nevermind endless "practical Hondas".
So the M is my reward for good, (read - no Italians please, except the wife) good behavior.
Only earlier F experience was a better start with a tragic ending. 330 GTC with a swallowed valve bought for cheap -- threw a chain tensioner, chain skipped a cog, ate valves, one bent and scrambled the top end . The engine parts alone cost more than the entire used car in 1973. That wasn't the tragedy though --tragedy is that I sold it. Compounded by later selling the 1973-1/2 911E I replaced it with. Back when I drove my cars and didn't have a Suburban to collect the miles and groceries. We all have our coulda woulda shoulda's.
550 Maranello also has a nasty little secret -- the reverse gear retainer clip -- comes adrift and just scrambles the transaxle.
I'll take a fussy SMG with 4 years warranty/no-questions-asked service -- thank you very much. Wife had a virtually bulletproof 740 and finally convinced me to go German
