How often do you go through oil?

How often are you guys going through oil? 3 weeks ago I was a quart low and refilled it, and once again I was a quart low today. It seems as if I get on the car hard enough I can drop 1/2 a quart in a 5 hour trip as well. Is this normal?

I go through a liter every 1000-1200 miles. I frequently take 250 mile trips to Houston and can watch it drop right before my eyes. I usually leave the oil level display on the dash to monitor it closely.

My 07 uses almost no oil at all. During the 20,000 miles I've put on in the last 3 years I've only had to add 1 qt between the oil changes. There's really only 3 ways for an engine to use oil; Past the rings, through the intake valve guides, and with leaks. I don't know if these engines have what they call "positive valve seals" like I use when I've built engines. If they don't have them I'm thinking these engines at least have bronze valve guides. Most likely though the rings are the primary reason some of you use more oil. Depending on how the rings were seated with engine break-in will determine how well they seal during the life of the engine. Variables during the cylinder honing process could also determine how well the rings will seal. Most likely it's just a matter of luck on how much oil your engine uses.

Up the shift speed to S3 with the button below the shift stick. That will get it in 1st on a standstill.
Does anyone know if this can this be coded, because it annoys me every start-up?
Also, if you do a lot of short trips and then a long one, you'll see the oil level drop spectacularly as it re-adjusts for usage. Best advice is NOT to take the oil level on the dash as a calibrated value. Just keep a quart in the trunkspace next to the battery and refill when asked.
These are huge engines with tight tolerances so they use a lot of oil when cold or at very high revs (preferably don't do those at the same time )

It seems like I have to add a quart every 1,000-1,500 miles. I keep about about 4 quarts in the trunk just to be safe. I like to keep a little extra just in case I'm with other M6's or M5's and they don't have any.

In the 2007 we had we went through a quart every 2k miles. With the 2010 it has 14k miles on it now and only put in 1 qt at 8k miles, but they changed the oil at the 1200 mile service. Then recently at 13k miles for the oil change, but it wasn't low. We bought the 2010 new and broke it in properly. Not sure if that has anything to do with it????
