Questions on Towing and MMobility Kit

I've never had a flat in the last 8 years of driving and decided I need to stop assuming it wont happen and get ready to deal with it. Unlike my SUV, the beast doesnt have a spare tyre and I did a quick read on using the M-Mobility Kit. Few questions for the more seasoned owners here.
  • Do most people use this or simply have the car towed, or have an AA guy come and fix the flat?
  • Does the M-mobility kit work well and did you all find it easy to use? It just seems like a strange method of fixing flats!
  • Regarding towing, I noticed the car has towing hooks. Do you all use that for the towing or simply use it to load the car on a flat-bed?
  • Has anyone had difficulty getting a flat bed at late hours/remote locations?
  • Do most tow-er's know how to deal with the 'low and wide' M6's?
  • Where do you tow the car to if you are far away from a big city and dont have access to a BMW dealer/dealer is closed? (any mechanic shop, BMW dealer etc)? I dont trust leaving my car at any shop but realize sometimes I wont have an option.
Thoughts appreciated!

I hear ya, I also have not had a flat tire for as long as I can remember but when your in a car that does not come with a spare it's constantly on your mind. My wife use to drive a SC430 which came with the run flats and no spare. Once I got away from the run flats we purchased a spare tire kit from Lexus and of course always AAA. When my wife got the M6 same situation no spare and no run flats. So as always we have AAA but wanted a spare for trips or any long distance driving. Searched it out and ended up finding a spare tire kit for the car. The kit comes with the spare and all tools needed along with a tote bag. So now I just throw that in the trunk when we drive long distances or anywhere that has long stretches of nothing. You can check out the spare tire kit--->BMW 6 Series E63/E64 645i/550i Spare Tire Kit (Emergency Space Saver) : Bimmerzone.com

The spare tire you referenced is the 6 series tire, it will not fit on an M6 as it does not clear the brakes. I know this because a guy who upgraded his 6 to an M6 tried it! You need to purchase the M5 spare tire kit, it includes a 12mm spacer. I have a spare to couple with my Run-Flats so that if I am in the middle of Florida and hours away from a tow truck I am at least able to hopefully change it myself and get somewhere major. I will warn you now, it is kills the trunk space in my vert which is why I only put it in for road trips. Around town the RFT will get me or my wife home with no problem. Matter of fact they already have 3 times.

The tow hook is to pull your car up on to the flatbed. Nobody tows a car by pulling it behind unless your buddy comes to get you with his pickup truck and a long tow rope. The flat bed will use the tow hook to pull the car up and on to the bed. You do need it as there is no other way to hook up underneath, besides you would rip the bumper up trying! The other option is a tow truck that lifts your front wheels, but I would think that is not a viable as the rear would rub? I don't know, just request a flat bed. They should have the necessary wood to build up the ramp so you don't destroy your car.

The mobility kit is nothing more than a bottle of Slime and an air compressor but with BMW price tag and branding. However, it fits very nicely into the empty area in your trunk. Here is a picture courtesy of a post by Yorgi. Some have found a compressor and put it in that area and bought a standard bottle of Slime from Wal-Mart which also fit real nice.

With the exception of picking it up from Houston, I've never driven my car more than 100 miles away. That said, I had a flat less than 3 miles from my home and had to turn away the first 2 flat beds because of the, "I ain't never seen one of these in person before...how do you hook 'er up?" syndrome. Thanks for coming and Good-Bye!!

The really surprising thing I discovered was the sheer number of people who wanted to help. I was there a good 2 hours and at least 15 people offered to take me to a tire store or home to pick up my spare car. It was a very pleasant surprise. I had the opportunity to show the beast to some nice people who really appreciated the technology and craftsmanship. We have to remember...cars like this remain an unreachable dream for most people. Even as prices fall, most can't afford the maintenance.

The extra tire in the back of the car is a great idea but a very cumbersome solution. Currently, I just check my tires before setting off and keep an eye on road debris and hope for the best. It may seem a bit pollyanna but any high performance car has these issues...it's all part of it. If I do decide to go on a long trip, I will probably employ this solution, as well.
Cheers,
mk

Our M6 comes with a lifetime FREE roadside assistance from BMW. The sticker with the phone number info is inside the trunk.

Call that number and a flat bed will come to you usually around 2 hours time.

By the way, I too worry about getting stuck out in the road somewhere where I cannot get a phone signal and no cars driving by - so I purchased a spare wheel and tire.

I found a 7 series spare wheel and tire in pristine condition in Craigslist and I paid 100 bucks for it. I tried it on and it fits perfect.

Whenever I go on long drives I just put it in the trunk for peace of mind.

By the way, I had my E39 M5 (no spare tire) for 3 years, and now my M6 for almost 4 years and never had a flat tire.

That is an awesome tip. Is it a 7 series full size tyre or a spare? Which year model (or do you have a photo), I will look for one (if it's a full size I might as well keep an eye out for an M6 tyre/wheel as well)

If you have a list of other model tyres that would fit I will appreciate it.

Is it an E65/66 wheel? I had four 19's from my old 750 and ended up giving them to the dealership I traded it to as I didn't think I would have any use for them and didn't want to go through the hassle of selling them.
