Problems with engine temp and high idling

Hi Guys,

Need your thoughts please.

I have been having this problem quite consistently over the past few months. Its ironic that it happens to be since I got the latest Evolve map. I dont want to suggest that its map related but it could well be, i tried eliminating the doubts by switching over to stock map with the help of evolve r cable and the symptoms still persist.

The problems I am facing are as follow:

Engine used to heat up very quickly, i mean within 2 mins from cold start it shot to 100C, that was strange. However, I realised that the oil gauage wasnt reading correct oil levels and it was running low to like 0.3 - 0.4 L but still not in the dangerous territory to have the engine heat up so rapidly and this was all during normal driving conditions. I managed to rectify the problem by topping up. The problem now is that if i drive a little spiritedly it goes slightly over 100C which is worrying.

Secondly: Since the evolve map my idle rpm is consistently at 1K rpm, before it would sit at where it would normally be such as 500rpm. This problem is intermittent though and i also believe both problems are inter-related.

Hassan on the forum very kindly has suggested flushing the coolant plus changing one of the batteries. The ECU has picked up coolant sensor faults numerous times but the dealer wont look at it as it hasnt shown up on their system as I do have extended warranty.

Regards

I think my engines have run around that temp normally on both of the beasts I own(ed) so not sure if that is really an issue. As far as the idling, perhaps that is a tuning thing or have you changed out pulleys or something? Seems like a rather large increase....

No pulleys as yet. Could it be a battery issue, probably on its way out? it is a 6 year old car with 35K miles

If your car is 6 years old and running on original battery - I recommend changing the battery ASAP as you are now running your battery on borrowed time. Batteries useful live is usually around 5 years, 6 years max.

Get a volt meter and check your battery. Fully charged battery should be around 12.7 volts DC.

If its not your battery or altenator, you might have a problem with your fuel system.

Lets hope its just a mtter of voltage.

The car running above 100C during spirited driving is normal and is not dangerous. I think the oil cooler starts working only when the oil temp goes above 103Cs. Also, remember that youare running 10W-60 oil for a reason. It actually provides better lubrication at higher temps as it flows faster.

So, the only thing I would worry about it the raised RPM. Perhaps you should ask Sal to check the tune again. Especially the maps controlling the throttle actuators.

Good Lcuk!

Thats what I did, kept badgering him with questions but he is adamant that he didnt tweak the throttle or the rev, when I swicthed to the stock map the problem was the same. Someone mentioned to check the water level as that could cause to raise the rev.
thanks for all your advise. I still need to look into the fuel system such as the fuel filter as you suggested. I dont think injectors would have any issues. The petrol consumption is quite heavy actually. I get no more than 2 miles per litre, if I am cruising then 3-3.5 if i am lucky.

Any problem with the fuel system will actually give you a fault code.

Check the voltage and the carbon filter behind the fuel tank.

Whenever I had idling issues it was always related to the vanos. Let us know how you get on pls interested to hear what happens and good luck!

Johnny Bravo: how bad was your idling? i am sure it would throw up a fault code if the vanos would be faulty. Vanos recall was done right at the begining by the way.
