Well said. I was reading a review of the new M5 Vs the CTS-V. While the M5 did beat it on a track, the feeling of the journos was that the CTS-V was the better drivers car (more agile, sounded better, feel etc). They said the M5 felt isolated and numb. I also read a few reports where folks claimed the M6 felt heavy, understeery etc.

Additionally they lose the NA high revving ultra-responsive signature 'M' engines (I believe for emissions and economy), then they increase the weight (the M6 coupe goes from 3750 pounds in the V10 to 4200+ with the TT v8) and all the dimensions, then they lose the amazing V10 wail and replace it with engine/exhaust sound played back from the speakers. Speed isnt everything, if it was the Corvettes would be greater than the 911's.

I am really surprised to hear this, makes me feel BMW is forgetting what an 'ultimate driving machine' is all about -handling, feel, involvement and nuance; exactly the points BMW enthusiasts have always used to differentiate their cars from the competition (other than Porsche of course). The new M6/M5 seems to be heading purely down the touring road where AMG plays, but I guess this is what the research team and BMW is discovering is popular for their segments?

Weirdly enough the Americans are building more enthusiast oriented rides, even the new Buicks, Caddys, Stangs are coming with manuals and incredible focus on the suspension, trackability etc.

The new M6 does look sick though!

Definitely looks good, but what a porker. There's only so much suspension work you can do to hide physics...

I'd still take a coupe in a heartbeat though.

So, am I the only one here who thinks this car has lost its personality and look that separates it from the others? It seems to be very sleek, but looks kind of plain to me. Flame away!

I agree with you 100%. That is why I went with the R8 and cancelled my M6 order. The M5 and M6 just look so boring. I hate the fact some one can buy a 550 or 650 and just throw on the M package. It really is a disservice for the M owners because it lowers their values. BMW also screwed everyone on the E60 and E63 M5/M6 because they made so many of them and the value went to **** so fast. They will do the same thing with this car.

Audi is headed in the right direction I believe. They cut the production of the R8 in half to protect the current owners and to make the car special.

BMW has shown no innovation or brilliants on these new M cars if you ask me. They keep gaining weight and all they do is throw in a more powerful engine to make up for that. That is a load of crap. Take a look at the R8, Gallardos, any of the S cars from Audi.... They all continue to lose weight. I am not sure about AMG.

This is just all my opinion

If I had to get a M car I would get the E9x M3 and strap on a SC I know the new M5 and M6 are fast but they will not be for long. Just wait for the newer cars that are coming out that are lighter and have the DCT.

I think it is unfair to compare the M vehicles to an R8. The big difference, at least to me, is that the R8 is a fully independent design. It doesn't have a shared platform and body style to a lesser performing vehicle (i.e. the 650/M6, the 328/M3, etc). Sure, it has two different engine options, fast and really fast. But not shared to a much larger mass produced vehicle like BMW does.

The 3 series has had an M package option going back for years. To be honest, before I became a BMW owner, I had no idea or cared to know the extent that an M surpasses the regular base model it resembles. I couldn't have told you when I saw a 3 series whether it was M or not, or the 650/M6. And I am more car savvy than most of the guys I hang with. Come over to the 6 board and you will see tons of folks who have upgraded to M6 rims, or M6 bumpers, so this has been going on for a long time and is not new. BMW is just capturing more profit for themselves that folks were taking to the aftermarket shops.

Regarding the R8, one other point I'd like to chip in is on price. Although the new M's are not inexpensive by any means, unless I am mistaken, the R8 V-10 is significantly more expensive than the new M6 coupe, and is comparitivly tiny on the inside and not nearly as utilitarian. By that, I mean try going away for a long weekend in the R8 with the girlfriend or wife, packing luggage and equipment to play.

The R8 is exclusive, but not a grand touring automoble that lends itself to the kind of trips some of us like to take.

I do wish they would take 300 lbs out of the new coupe though-how did we go from about 3900 lbs to like 4240 lbs with a smaller displacement engine? Where is the weight coming from?

This is a great question! Most car manufacturers find ways to cut weight and add HP when making the next generation model. But this got heavier.

i agree... although it does look "sleeker", i think it has lost the outright "menacing" look of the E63 model....just doesn't look mean enough to me.....
