I had couple of connections at the local dealer and they put me in touch with a tech who used to work for them.
I don't believe it will be practical enough for you guys outside London. He took his time and did it over 3 days.
Well it's almost been a month but I went ahead and replaced both the clutch and the flywheel. I thought I would be able to get away with just changing the clutch but the flywheel was badly damaged as well. I bought a Sachs clutch for about $750 delivered and a LUK flywheel for $940 delivered. The flywheel was extremely hard to find other than buying it from the dealer ($1800 here in BMW of Alexandria) so I searched high and low and found ONE flywheel from a LUK dealer. Apparently the LUK flywheels are in high demand and the company cannot keep up with demand so I was only able to find one dealer in the UK who was able to get it to me relatively quickly.
Went ahead and had them both installed a few days ago and the car has never run better. Now when I step on the gas it goes, and no transmission malfunction either. At the end of the day I spent about $2600 total with material and labor compared to the $4800 BMW quoted me. HIGHLY recommend changing both flywheel and clutch if anyone has a malfunction and gears are slipping. Thanks for everyone's help on here. I have attached pics of the new flywheel (photo 1) and the old flywheel and clutch(photos 2 & 3).
Very interesting! Would you mind posting serial numbers so future undertakers can get their search started easier? And did you have to bring in your M6 to the dealer to re-learn the new components? My guess is that now with more and more leases are ending, and warranties are expiring more and more of these cars will be put in the hands of DIY enthusiasts. There is not much info for these beasts available (in comparison to other cars) so every bit helps.
I thought I would have to have the flywheel and clutch re-learned at the BMW dealer but it learned it perfectly fine upon startup. I did do the SMG reset (holding both shift paddles down when on the highway for a few seconds) and it worked perfectly. You do need to have about 500-1000 miles on the new clutch before it fully feels great but everyday I drive it, it feels better and better.
Here are the serial numbers on the parts I ordered.
Sachs clutch Serial Number: K70467-01 BMW Part Number: 21 21 2 283 089 ordered from fcpeuro.com $650 (paid an extra $100 for next day delivery)
LUK Dual Mass Flywheel for SMG transmission: BMW Part Number: 21 21 2 229 955 Motor Haus Product Code (motor-haus.co.uk): 415039210 Approx $805 and extra $140 for delivery from overseas (will vary depending on location for delivery and Owen over there is GREAT!)
well done you couldnt have gone wrong with those parts since they are the orginal manufactures for BMW for 3rd of the price. I have had mine done 6 months ago and no problems whatsoever.
What about the smg pump and relay. Since you were already inside the transmission I would have thought maybe it would have been smart to replace them since the parts are not too pricey and most people have issues with the smg pump way before they do with the clutch/flywheel.

No I didn't change those. There wasn't any need beause it looked like the last owner used his warranty to replace everything that was not working before it ended. I will let warranty handle it when the time arises.

Did you order any other parts like fork and other miscellaneous parts? How much was labour?
