Why would you ever want to increase unsprung weight on your car? Of all of the places to add any pounds, this is where ride and handling is most effected (adversely that is).

I'd pass on the caliper covers...

So caliper covers are cheezy, but painting your calipers is not cheezy?

I like how some of the ///M cars on this board have turned out after they painted there calipers, and I find it to be a tasteful mod giving the car a cleaner appearance. I have a buddy of mine with a Ferrari 360 who is planning on powder coating his calipers. I think it will turn out nice.

So the covers are supposed to be an alternative to painting your calipers. In regards to unsprung weight, the weight of the aluminum covers is negligible (I spoke to one of the reps at MGP and they are less than 2.2lbs including the shipping box). They actually help to cool the brakes according to this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf3nnZTAXcg

Still though, I am not convinced with the MGP caliper covers. Do you guys think they will pass tech inspection at the track for track days? Do you guys see any safety issues with them? Do you believe the video that they actually improve the cooling of the brakes? Appearance wise, why are they worse than painting your calipers?

Here is a photograph of the MGP Brake Caliper Cover. Well....if you do not think of it as an imitation "Brembo" painted caliper, but rather as a brand new thing that never existed before: "A brake caliper dust cover/heatsink". I guess it could work.

I agree those are hideous. Just go ahead and paint ur calipers. There is a DIY on here somehwere. I Just did mine this weekend and I think they look great.

Just make sure you do a good job masking off and you will be fine.

I got them for my m5 and put them on a few day's ago i think they look good. I got them in black with sliver BMW and it cleans up the look of the brakes a lot. I'm not trying to pass them off as a BBK but they do make the oem brakes look a lot cleaner. BBK's are 6000.00 to 8000.00 and my car is street drive so oem with carbotech 1521 pads work great for me.Anyone ever do Caliper Covers?-2012-07-20_11-48-30_252.jpg

Thanks for sharing photos.

As long as you are happy with them - that is all that matters.

We are just providing our honest and respectful opinion. At the end of the day, it is your car so always do whatever makes you happy.

Nice M5!
