When this was first posted by Mark the Euro was at 1.4400 to the dollar. Euro keeps dropping...now at 1.3200 to the dollar. You guys are getting it cheaper and cheaper. Essentially for you and your "companion" you are getting a discount of $273 since then...more gas money!!!!
Wish I could join you. Work always tends to get in the way of my fun
The price for attending is NOT, I repeat NOT 1390Euros for the driver and 890 Euros for the accompanying person.
It is 1640,2 Euros for the driver and 1050,2 Euros for the accompanying person.
REASON : Bmw says that prices given were net and the additional charge is for the Spanish VAT 18%.
To me this is ridiculous, because in Europe ALL retail prices including services are ALWAYS with VAT.
There is even a law In Europe that says ALL RETAIL PRICES MUST BE GIVEN INCLUDING VAT ( IT IS OBLIGATORY ).
Only wholesale prices can be given without VAT.
I feel angry and I am about ready to pull the trigger and cancel the trip.

I re-read the PDF which lists the price and it reads in part:
COST OF THE PACKAGE:
1.390 Euro net for active driving participants.
890 Euro net for accompanying participants.
I think the term "net" is meant to mean the proceeds to the seller (BMW M). In the U.S. the term "net" implies the resulting cost after discounts, etc. are taken into account. But in the U.S. sales taxes are then applied for in-state commerce (yielding "gross" amount), but not for out of state commerce (as a rule).
I was hoping that "net" or no mention of any other terms with tax implications would be found in the BMW brochure ("with price") PDF file. Unfortunately "net" is mentioned in the pricing statement.
BTW - Spain's VAT rate is 18%. Germany's is 19% so it would be even worse if the "transaction" or "goods or services" were sold in Germany.
I think everyone is stuck with the tax. Like George, I think this was misleading and is cause for anger. But I don't know that there is much recourse unless anyone decides this has become a deal breaker for them and asks BMW M to cancel their registration and give a full refund due to the less than clear pricing.
George, what does "net" generally mean in Europe (where there is VAT)?
I will send an email to BMW M tonight and see if they know what the event attendees who signed up via the U.S. "Performance Center" (BMWNA) are paying. It will be interesting to see how we fare compared to the "normal" customers.
I just cancelled my registration and my wife's registration. It is not a matter of money. It is a matter of principle. Vague and misleading information is not my style.
The word "net" means nothing when someone offers prices to end users-buyers. It is obligatory to clarify the VAT charge, otherwise the price given is considered to include ALL taxes.
I expect BMW to refund me my money ASAP.
Jason,
I too have prepaid tickets and hotels. I will go to Spain with my wife for vacation, but I will not tolerate this.
Similar to George, I am disappointed that BMW was not very forthcoming when regards to total costs of this event.
They should have added a note stating "Price does not include VAT. Spain VAT is currently at 18%"
I dont think it was intentional so I am not that mad at BMW. However, that is indeed added unexpected costs.
I am now considering canceling my attendance and just vacation in Spain with my wife.
For the price BMW now wants to charge us - I would rather do the M driving school since I have not done that yet.
I checked my American Express account and they have not charged my card yet.
I will have to think about this some more but currently I am leaning towards canceling my attendance.

Wow, you guys...I know that you're all upset about the extra VAT charges but don't let that stop you from going to experience the new M5. It's the little things that may matter at first but once you're there, taking in the experience, all that will be forgotten. Don't back out folks...I'm still planning to go as I mentioned earlier. I'm a bit surprised but from past experience I kind of expected this too.
Why don't we wait for Mark to receive a reply from BMW M, and see what that response is in total. I too was not expecting VAT to be added, and I do want to go, but was looking forward to the brotherhood, as much as the driving event. So Dan, and others, as they said in 'Backdraft", "You go, we go", (or don't go)
Thanks for chasing all of this Mark
