Hi ppl...Greg again with some more news that i just luv bringing to you nice people.
Just received the latest edition of Wheels here in Oz and wanted to share with u the article on the new 6 and V10 details:
With a 373kW engine for the M6 at the top its new two-door range, BMW will take the coupe fight right to Mercedes.
BMW’s all new 6 Series coupe – exclusively revealed here – will be crowned by an M6 version running a secret V10 engine.
The M6’s debut in 2004, a year after six and eight-cylinder 6 Series models arrive, will raise the power struggle between BMW and arch rival Mercedes to epic proportions.
Merc has thrown down the gauntlet with its 350kW SL55 AMG, but BMW plans to top 373kW with its new V10. According to insiders, the V10 will “build a bridge between F1 and road cars.”
The 5.0-litre V10 will rev to 8000rpm and provide performance to defeat even the AMG SL55’s 4.6sec 0-100km/h time and 325km/h maximum speed – if BMW relents and makes this the first M car not to be restricted to 250km/h, as seems likely.
Although the flagship M6 will be priced to take on its $243,000 Merc rival (note: in AU$ an M5 costs $194,240 to make comparison)
, the 6 Series is tipped to start at around $103,000 with the 630Ci whit it goes on sale next year.
This entry level version, to be built on the next 5 Series platform, will run BMW’s 170kW 3.0-litre six. But it will incorporate Valvetronic technology, not currently available on a BMW straight-six.
Two V8’s transplanted from the 7 Series will flash out the range. The 635Ci’s 3.6-litre V8 should produce 202kW, while a 245kW 4.4-litre V8 will power the 645Ci. Both will use Valvetronic technology.
All models should perform well thanks to the coupe’s light weight. From the A-pillar forward, the front load-bearing structure is largely aluminium and other extruded aluminium sections are bounded and riveted to the main steel monocoque.
At an expected 1600kg, the M6 could boast as much as 235kW/tonne. The Sl55 weighs 1974kg and musters 177kW/tonne.
In all 6 Series models, power is transmitted to the rear wheels through the six-speed automatic gearbox developed by ZF and introduced on the new 7 Series. The latest incarnation of the M3’s SMG will be an option.
The 6 Series will bristle with other high-tech gadgets. Like the SL, it will sport brake-by-wire technology as well as Dynamic Drive.
Dynamic Drive, as seen on the 7 Series, employs a hydraulic pump to act on the anti-roll bars, ironing out body roll and enhancing grip. And with BMW’s EDC-C electronic damping, drivers will be able to select from a multitude of ride settings.
Our spyshots - the first to reveal the coupe’s lines in broad daylight – provide the most revealing look at the car to date. Expect the production version to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2003. A convertible version will follow, but BMW has ruled out a folding hard-top
jezzzz that took awhile to type up
