DYI _Coding the E63-E64 *Updated 02-21-2011

I've just received my cable this morning, and although labelled as a K DCAN+ cable, it has pin 8. I bought from the Canadian vendor, Dan you'll most likely have the same thing buddy.

I've opened it up, and it seems that pin 8 is joined by solder to pin 7, so in effect is carrying whatever Pin7 is. It looks like an easy enough job, just unsolder from the reverse. So I am assuming on all of the working cables Pin 8 does not exist at all? Alan, would it be possible to put a picture up of yours, so I can be certain before I unsolder this one.

Here is closeup of the cable pins. As you can see pin#8 is missing, as it should be. This was one of the major differences in our cars vs. other models where this cable would in fact work. From the reading I have done, and at least one confirmed first hand desolder of the shunt between pin 7 and pin 8, removing the wire going to pin 8 allows the cable to work properly with our E63-64's.

It will cause the cable to no longer be backward compatible with K only type OBDI model cars, but I for one didn't buy one for anything other than my E64.

Dave, leaving the cable out of the picture for the moment. You definitely have a program problem and likely incompatible with the image on your laptop as you surmised. Can you try loading the program on a different laptop? Or perhaps on a desktop you may have, just as a test. I think the program isn't liking your laptop, and I've seen reports of certain Dell brands not accepting the files properly (I use a Dell from work and it does work just fine). It may not like your laptop unless you start partitioning your HDD, which may mess with your required work image.

I think we may be getting to the bottom of the cable communications problems via this pin for some of you.

Finally had a chance to do some testing with the fuel reserve warning indicator.

Here are the settings and approximate values when the warning will come on

Module: KOMBI
Line of code: tank_schwelle_reserve
Standard setting: wert 03

Options:
wert 02 warning appears with approximately 1/8 tank, 36 miles to empty
wert 01 warning appears with a little less than 1/8 tank, 24 miles to empty

In both cases, once you reach approximately 20 miles to empty, the fuel tank light stays lit and the iDrive screen maintains a countdown of xx miles to empty.

I left the setting at wert 02. Got a little scared leaving it at 01 with visions of AAA or BMW Roadside assistance with a container of 87 Octane and an embarrassing look on my face

I removed pin 8, not much trouble at all, just undo the solder joint and remove the pin. I have communication through INPALOAD and also NCSExpert, but having the same trouble others are mentioning when going back(F6).

I've attached a screenshot of what error i'm getting. I have done all the updates to daten etc.
Any ideas Alan?

Ignore the previous post, I solved it using Clyde/Zerocks solution posted earlier in this thread. Basically clear the text located within the TRC/MAN files from the work folder. It seems to be an issue caused by a corrupt original profile read.

All working well! I now have a digital speedo reading!! Thanks for all your help

Thats great reesy. Glad the pin desolder worked. Yes the F6 return is usually a corrupt .TRC and .MAN and/or duplicate file with the same extensions in your work folder. Found that out the same way you did.

Plenty you can do now. Just make sure you have a backup of the original modules files, just in case. Name them all something you will recognize and save them in your backup folder, not your work folder

I've had a little play already! Got the indicators in the HUD and the digital speed on the BC button. I was trying to do the folding mirrors, but was unsure what I needed to change. Do you remember which you did Alan? I remember it being in both KGM and CAS.

I will assume you car has the factory Comfort Access feature.

KGM module

CAS module
lines of code komfortschliessung_fb nicht_aktiv to aktiv (if not already). To use, exit car, hold lock button on FOB approximately 3 seconds and release

komfortschliessung_pa nicht_activ to aktiv This perform the same function with a two second touch on the door handle

I'm stuck at the same point you were. I renamed my .TRC file. Did you delete all of the text within the file but leave the file on the file system or do something else?
