I am in Yarldey, PA about 40 minutes from Red Bank. I am planning on getting the cable and would be happy to get together to play around with some of the coding.

Update:

FYI, I sold my 15.6" laptop and Netbook 6 months ago and purchased an iPad.
Happy with my iPad but I cant run Windows based program on the iPad. And my desktop PC and monitor is too big and heavy to move around.

My wife has a laptop too but I dont want to mess with her laptop.

So I ordered a new HP netbook with 11.6 bigger screen. It supposed to arrive yesterday, well it didnt : (

So for now, I will read all the instructions, download the NCS expert program to familiarize myself with the procedures and will start to try recoding my beast next week once my new Netbook arrives.

I have read the documentation and have some question please Alan.

On page 2 of Setting Up and Using NCS expert, step number 5, you mentioned "run the OBDsetup.exe. Then "YOU MUST RESTART after this".

Did you mean close and restart the program or restart the computer? Sorry if its a stupid question.

Good luck. Hope it works. Goal: two filled in circles left of the word 'Off", not white like the picture. If they are black circles, you're in! (see attachment)

Dan, that step means restart your computer. You are correct about not being able to run windows under an iPad OS. You can on a MAC if you happen to have access to one, but not an iPad. Guess your anticipation will have to wait a while longer. I'm anxious for you guys to start to add other changes we can make that I have not as yet uncovered. Im trying the HUD adjustments today and a few other things just for fun

stay tuned

Thanks for the clarification Alan.

I'm dead tired today.
I worked on my SUV for 10 hours yesterday. I installed a subwoofer under the passenger seat on my SUV.
Amazing difference in sound.

I installed a DVD player and replaced all the stock speakers with component speakers on my SUV last month so this month was the addition of subwoofer. The mini powered sub fits perfectly under the passenger seat. What an improvement over stock.

Today is play day. Supposed to be sunny today here in Seattle so time to go for a long drive, and do my other passion of taking photos.
I told the wife I will take her out to dinner when I get home (keep the peace at home.)

Hey Dan and others. Hope the SUV project turned out well. I was putting a water temp sensor in my wife's car yesterday, PITA.

So a quick update on what new items worked and didn't. I tried making aktiv, many HUD position adjustments in the module that controls the iDrive settings. The module wouldn't even accept the new changes, so being able to move the HUD display didn't work.
The I tried reducing the feedback we get on the iDrive wheel when it reaches the end position. It's called Haptic Feedback. The module has the code ZBE which has the default 'high', I changed it to 'low' then an option called 'low_with_slopes'. The latter causes the iDrive to spin so freely, it's difficult to get it to stop where you want it. The 'low' made less resistance when you reach the iDrive controls end of travel.

Not sure I liked it, so I returned it to 'high'.

I'm meeting a fellow member later today to try a model year '10 on some of these changes.

Thats the latest. Still enjoying the HUD turn signals, no legal disclaimer, folding mirrors, and fan speed light best. Oh, and the no cold LED testing on my side turns

Have a good Sunday everyone

Cheers Alan,

Thanks for the feedback. It seems that the haptic feedback is one of those things that we are forced to endure!

Looking forward to finding out on the obdcom cable from Dan, and getting going on the coding myself.

Enjoy your Sunday.

Hi Alan, thanks for the update!

I have read your DIY. Excellent! Again, never ending thank you for all the time you invested on research, trial and error, etc to gain all of this knowledge and share it with us. I owe you dinner when I finally get to meet you.

My new netbook is supposed to arrive next week.
Once it arrives - I will try the NCS software with the cable that came with my OBDCOM software.
If it wont work - then we will proceed with the group buy on the chinese made cable at $85 each - free shipping.
That is the best deal I can find for us and I have spent hours of web research and contacting suppliers.
I will post updates next week.

I am still very busy at work and at home so I may not have time to do some software trial and error on the other available features.
For now, can you kindly recommend to me what coding changes I should make active just to get me started?

Here are some photos of my SUV subwoofer installation that I spent 10 hours on yesterday.

Yikes! to the subwoofer mod. Now that indeed is a mod! Perhaps a new thread on that when you get further along. Intriguing to say the least.

Back to what mods to make

First, to get comfortable AND have a backup of every module, I strongly urge everyone to 'read' their modules first. On my Cab, there are 29

Not in alphabetical order; CAPPL, KOMBI, HUD, ABG, CAS, CAUDI, KBM, 2RS, MC, 2LSMC, AMPT, CANS, CGATE, CHOST, CTUNE, CVM, DSC, IHKA, KGM, PDC, PGS, RLS, TGBT, TGFT. Then there are ones that require some file updates to read. LMA (a previous thread has the additional file required), EDC, (I haven't posted those updated files yet)

The ones you will mostly work with are; CAPPL, KOMBI, HUD, ABG, CAS, IHKA, RLS, and LMA

So the first modification I suggest is the famous 'Legal Disclaimer' deactivation

CAPPL module; line of code 'Legal_Discl'. You can search for that line by 'edit'>'find'>'legal_discl">'next'. Change 'aktiv' to 'nicht_aktiv' (no quotes) and save as FSW_PSW.MAN (all caps) with 'all files' not 'TXT' in the box below the save as. Otherwise it will save it as a .txt file, which you do not want. Only one FSW_PSW.TRC (the one you read from the CAPPL module) and only one FSW_PSW.MAN file can be in the work folder (where the reads are saved) at one time. The follow the 'write' instructions in the tutorial. Car off, back on and on boot up, no more Legal Disclaimer

Tip: If a mistake is made or you are not sure what you may have written to any module, just create a blank (no content) FSW_PSW.MAN file. Put it in the work folder even if you override the one that is in there, and write it to the module you wrote in error. It reverts the module back to it's default state.

Thats how I would start, then move on to additional changes in the CAPPL module (you can change as many lines of code as you like at one time), then other modules. It's been recommended that a battery charger be on the car while doing this, although you will find the CAPPL module only requires one press of the start/stop button. Other require the Ign On mode.

CAPPL, KOMBI, and HUD are the most fun as you will soon see.
