Ugh, my first real problem with the car... It's a 2009 (bought in April 2009) with only 3,100 miles on it, this isn't supposed to happen yet!
NOTE: I have the previous version of iDrive (right before HD). But my car has the buttons for the ned HD iDrive, weird... I wonder if I can upgrade???
The other day I was driving along having while having a bluetooth phone convo with the wife and as soon as I hang up, things go weird...
The iDrive says I'm still on the call so I check my iPhone, and it's hung up. I try to end the call via iDrive, and it doesn't give me any phone/communication options. I'm in heavy traffic, so at a red light I shut the car down and restart. No luck. Radio never comes back off of mute from the call. Fortunately NAV still works but without any audio. All ENTERTAINMENT is muted. Most of the options (CD/Radio/etc...) are grayed out (un-selectable). Needless to say, I'm bummed. I don't try any other diagnostics until I get home, just in case she decides to shut down in traffic. Plus once I get home I get to search these boards!!! Once I get home I shutdown and restart again. No luck. I log onto the boards and read the various threads. I try the forced iDrive reboot (press both eject buttons along with volume button), no luck. I also try the eject DVD procedure to try and restart the iDrive, still no luck. So I'm forced to go to my dealer...
I call my service adviser and he says it sounds like the CCC (main iDrive module???). When he takes a look he says it's the TCU and is not a totally uncommon thing. Based on my reading of the board, it isn't an unheard of thing. He says he needs approval from BMN North America to replace. Today I'm dropping it off and he says it will take 2-4 days to fix. Thank goodness my adviser is nice enough to always give me my choice of loaner, but too bad my dealer doesn't have M loaners. I asked for a 135.
So have any of you experienced this??? Is my adviser's time estimate (2-4 days) accurate???
I've never experienced such issue.
My car went to a limp mode a few months ago and software was the issue.
They reloaded latest and greatest software and everything is now all good.
Since your car is under warranty, my input is not to worry about it.
Just take it to the $tealer and tell them to go fix it. That's what warranty is for.
Make sure problems and fixes are documented well on the service report.
Kindly keep us posted.

I've seen BMW and Mini bluetooth foul up and not recognize the end of a phone call. Of course the car thinks the call is going on so the audio is muted/disabled. If it happens again, try ending the call with the button on the phone, or vice versa (hang up only via the steering wheel button).
Anyway, on the older 6 cars (I had a 2005 645Ci), you could reboot the iDrive by doing the equivalent of a Control-Alt-Delete three finger salute. You press the eject buttons on both the CD and the Nav drives and press (and hold) the radio on/off knob. I hope I recall that correctly, its been a while since I've done that. I'm not sure what do try with the new electronics (I have a 2010 M6 coming across the pond at the moment) as there is no Nav drive on the center console.
I'm not sure any of this will help, but I seriously doubt that a new module is called for. The dealership just needs to bone up on how to reset the iDrive.

Based on my readings here on the board I've tried the reboot (eject + eject + vol knob) several times and have allowed the car go to SLEEP (1 hour untouched then overnight untouched). The problem didn't go away. All forms of ENTERTAINMENT were grayed out (un-selectable) and even the distance sensor warning noises (radar for parking) didn't emit noise. The iDrive didn't show that any bluetooth phone is connected anymore and to be safe I turned my cell phone bluetooth off.
Well I got the call from the dealer today notifying me that the replacement TCU came in and that they were in the process of loading the software. My service adviser warned me that there is a slight chance that the software load may fail and they might need an extra day to load it since it takes several hours to do.
At 3PM I got the second call, that my car was good to go and ready for pick up. Thank goodness. Just in time for the weekend and I was getting tired of the little Z4.
Got car back and all appears fine. Wow, I miss my car. That loaner Z4 was SLOW!!!
OK so here's what the invoice said:
"4219 ULF module interrupting MOST BUS communication WP connected GT1. Performed short test, found no MOST BUS components would respond during short test. Fiber optical jumper MULF module and found that MOST BUS recovered at this time. Replaced MULF module and reprogrammed complete vehicle with CAS"
I believe that was manually entered by either the service adviser or the tech, so I'm sure it has some BMW tech shorthand in there. I really can't tell what it means.
I'm just glad my baby's back and all appears well.
The Following User Says Thank You to JVProM6 For This Useful Post:
Sounds like they replaced a multifunction module and then "reprogrammed" which means got all of the various modules in the car to sync back together. This sounds like it should happen as fast as a PC boots up, but it may take hours. And if any one module fails to initialize correctly, the tech has to start over.
If they replaced a module and everything appears to be working, then you are fine.
I had window lift motors replaced on my 2005 645Ci back in 2006 or so. After installing the new motors, they had to "reprogram" the modules since they have sensors and "talk" to everything else. Sigh....
