Your users manual explains oil in detail !!

Alternative oil types
If BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil is unavailable, you can add small quantities of other synthetic oils between oil changes.
Only use oils with the following specifications:
> Viscosity
preferred: SAE 10W-60;
alternative: SAE 10W-40, SAE 5W-50 or
SAE 10W-50
> Specification
API SJ/CF, API SK/CF or higher

Top off your oil with Mobil1 15w50 - it is fully synthetic and will not hurt the engine. BMW recommends Castrol 10w60 but TRUST me, it is better to run topped off then "extremely low" on oil.

FWIW - Castrol is a partner with BMW, just like Mobil is with Porsche, MB, GM, Dodge, etc. Neither has a "magic" formula that is superior to the other. Its all about marketing and brand loyalty IMO. I have a supply of Castrol 10w60, but if I were in your shoes, I'd find the closest Mobil gas station.

Edit: OR, Castrol has a 5w50 that you can easily find in any auto parts store.

most of the time there is an advanced auto parts or autozone around. If I go on a trip and there is less than 0.3 I will take a bottle. If not, then I don't worry about it. I am afraid it will spill all over my trunk when I take curves tight lol

+1 - I have the BMW oil bag with oil & accessories in my trunk...it velcros anywhere in your trunk....less than $5, click here: Tischer, one of our sponsors - part # 83290144484

includes plastic gloves, cleaning cloth, and paper funnel, of course oil is not included, but my dealer gives me a extra bottle whenever I need it, also Tischer has oil as well. click here: Oil - part# 07510009420

example picture only, correct oil for M6 is TWS Motorsport 10w60 Synthetic Motor Oil

i almost always have a bottle in the trunk. i think it was around 1/4 full before (did not have the +1 quart message) i left so knowing it was low i put it a full quart of the 10w 60 in. the trip was around 500 miles each way so i figured i would have been ok for 1000 miles. guess not but made happy i made it home ok

I use this kit also, it's really a great item, even the paper funnels work well!
