I recently went in for low tire pressure and weird grippy noise. They said they need to test drive the car to find out what the noise is about and they marked my mileage at 12000 which I found kind of peculiar since I had 1198x miles on it (I always thought they give the exact numbers). My car ended up at the dealership for 3 days as they said there is a nail in the tire (which needs to be replaced), the noise is due to some differential problem (which they claim to have fixed but I can still clear the noise at times) and that they recommend alignment. My car was ready today but the odometer read 12028 (on the invoice, they again quoted 12020, a difference of 8 miles).
My question is, is it possible that the test drive + wheel change + alignment/wheel spin = 30+ miles? Or did someone take the car for a joy ride or two?
Edit: They charged me 425 for the alignment. I had to talk to another service adviser to get it reduced to 249......Daylight robbery?
Edit 2: Oh, I got a quote for fixing a few rock chips. They said they need to repaint the entire front part of the car and quoted me $2500. WTH????? For that, I might as well just get a new hood.....
Thanks

They always try to sell expensive alignment though. That's normal. And I usually turn them down for just a nail. If I blew out a tire from road debris, then maybe yes. 30 miles is not that bad for a test drive, but its not that good either. SA or mechanic will test drive your car if you have mystery noises. But if you don't trust your dealership to be be playing straight with you, its time to look elsewhere for service.

Just got my car back from the dealer. They had put 10 miles on the car exactly...which isn't bad. The bad part is that they used 1/4 tank of gas! I am not sure if it sat at idle for an hour or if they drove the hell out of it, but my average gas mileage dropped by .3 mpg, and it takes a lot to move that thing!
I DON'T LET ANYONE at the dealer test drive my car, even if all hell will break loose. I give them strict instructions not to and if they do I or any of my employees are accompanying them. Mine is the only 500+ BMW cabrio in the country and i'm not that found of them exploring the curiosities. 3 years ago I left a 2006 M3 which costs 130,000$ at the time for a oil change and i come back to see a blown motor from one of the employees joy rides, and how do they compensate? They fire him and thats it!!!
Ohhhh that is a horror story indeed!! I don't like to leave my car in anyone else's hands either...
I had a similar issue with my former M3 at the official BMW dealer, I reset the trip meter AND the trip computer which works independently. When I was about to pick-up the car I checked both and noticed a clear difference between the two (don't remember exactly how much)... They had obviously taken the car for a joyride and some and then reset the trip on their way back so it wouldn't show...
On top of the above incident they charged me like $ 500 for finding a worn plastic pin (between an actuator and the intake throttle opening) that had came of, they just pushed it back on. It came of again 5 minutes after leaving the shop, the worst part of all is that after that and i expressed that i was pretty pissed with them, they still insisted on charging me $ 3 for a new plastic pin (which I fitted myself in 2 minutes)... That was my final visit to that shop... For you Swedes, "Borgs Bil" in vällingby, steer clear of them!

Guess what...I found a torn up movie ticket in the car today! One that I know for a fact I never went to! It looks to be from a theater just down the road from the dealer. I don't trust these guys either because they are all really young. Seems weird to me that they burned through 1/4 tank of gas and drove it only 10 miles. I don't want to go into the dealer blazin but something doesn't seem right. Probably can't do anything anyway, but you can guarantee I will drive my car 60 more miles to the dealer I bought it from! I would have done that anyway, but it was in limp mode and I didn't want to risk that for 60 more miles through the mountains where there is no cell service.

Looks that way to me. I may just visit that theater and compare tickets lol. If so, then I am not sure what to say or do. 10 miles isn't bad, but if they were going WOT the whole time there and back I will be mad. Considering 1/4 tank was gone, I would say they drove the hell out of it.
Funny thing I noticed in that link you sent...a truck load of Jaguars in front of the BMW dealer lol
