Amazing marketing for "Sportronic/Tiptronic/Manualmatic"

I'm amazed at how so many car manufacturers (including BMW) have marketed and "tricked" the general public with their "manual/auto" cars.

Quite a few people have commented on my M6.. See, I was a die hard 6 spd guy (loved my modded E46 M3).. but final caved on the SMG.. now I love it..but I would stillove the 6 spd every now and then..
. many people see me use the paddle shifters and said:

"oh, you got the optional 'sport' paddle shifters like my 328 coupe!", or
"oh, so your Sportronic rougher the one I have in my Mitsu Eclipse", or
"oh, those paddle shifters are the same as my A4 w/ the tiptronic shifter"..

arrrrggghhhhhhh.... I hate explaining things to those the lesser informed. I'm not trying to be a prick, but man! the car manufacturers have everyone fooled thinking they're "F1" style shifting cars are the real deal...

just wanted to share my frustration..

I completely agree. Even though I have an M3 6 speed, I often find myself trying to explain the difference between SMG and tip/steptronic (or whatever the hell its called). They never seem to get it

What? You mean the paddles on my Mini Clubman 6 speed auto aren't just like SMG in an M6??? I'm shocked

lol you know this one is soooo true, my little sister just got a 2009 nissan rogue and it had 185hp and a CVT tranny and it has paddle shifters!! now this is a car with no gears! but they preset 6 "ratios" in the cvt to give the effect, pretty slick but all these tip tronics are completely different from a sequential gearbox like smg, dsg, pdk, dct
