Welcome drill.
For a good comparison, have a look at this thread, offered by one who's owned both cars.

You see quite a few people trading in M5s for M6s (me included.) Not sure if you see m/any trading M6s for M5s. Go for the M6.

M6 over M5 any day
As I stated in my thread, I own a 6 and drove the 5 a lot at the Performance center...and I prefer the M6 hands down....just a better car. but if you need to transport 4 people, then buy the 5...the m6 rear seats are a joke.

Honestly... it's the same thing...
Do you need a 4-Door or a 2+2 GT?

Definitely not the same thing. The feel and look of the cars are quite different.

I think you have your facts reversed. The M6 is 264.6 pounds lighter.

Technically of course you are light, but pound for size, M6 is heavier, so it handles different as opposed to a much longer car.

The M6 is just over a hundred pounds lighter, which is small given the enormous difference in interior room/capacity.
Here are the weights (unladen):
M5 Sedan: 4012 http://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/M/M5Sedan/techdata.htm
M6 Coupe: 3909 http://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/M/m6coupe/techdata.htm
M6 Convertible: 4398 http://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/M/m6convertible/techdata.htm
Here is my quick take on the major relative advantages of the M5 and M6:
M5 positives:- More capacity: sits 4 to 5 with relative comfort. The M6 rear seat is only usable by small kids and dwarfs. When the front seats are back, the M6 rear is only usable by amputees and yoga masters.
- Better value: More for less money.
- Better comfort: The M5 seats are more comfortable, especially the active-ventillated comfort seats. I suspect they are not made available on the M6 because of their extra depth that would take yet more away from its already minimal rear-seat legroom. The M5 front has more headroom and it allows a more upright driving position. The suspension is also slightly more compliant. The sunroof is nice.
M6 positives:- Slightly faster due to the 100+ lbs less weight.
- Slightly better handling due to less weight and lower weight due to the lower coupe design and the CF roof.
- More exclusive. There are fewer M6s than M5s. Many also prefer the look/style of the sleeker M6.
