BUT please forgive me if I go a bit off track here.

Do you guys sit in your cars with the engine off and play your stereos to appreciate the improved quality?

I ask because I have only the logic 7 in my car, it sounds very good compared to other cars and compared to my older BMW's, but the differences disappear when the ENGINE MUSIC is playing.

In fact whilst driving I never play the system at very high volume because it will easily mask sounds from outside traffic and from the mechanical functioning of the car itself. All those sounds are information I may want to use for safe fast driving.

I can see two times it would be useful. To impress passengers at rest, and to help sell the car when it comes time to part with it.

As a result I am not sure it was really worth the extra cash.

The other thing on my mind is electric power consumption, I well remember those late night calls from my son who had a high power Alpine system in his old GM Astra.

Dad, can you come and jump start me please my battery has gone flat from playing the stereo?

I know 800 odd watts is peak power, but how long before you have a dead battery too. An SMG car will be hard to start if there is no power for the electro-hydraulic pump.
I listen to the sound system on long highway drives. The engine's music is not entertaining for long at sustained cruising (not runnin' through the gears). Or when still (traffic, waiting to pick someone up ).

The Dirac amps consume MUCH less power than conventional analog amps. Typically a pure digital amp is > 90% efficient and therefore produce very little heat.

PS my 4 yo son is with me and insists on at least one smilie per paragraph

90% efficient at 800 watts still means 889 watts electrical input to the amp - analogue or digital makes no difference, you never get more out than you put in.

Yup, on my 07 E63 it says Enhanced Premium Sound on the sticker. I didn't even know it was an option for my BD 3-07 model. When they said that there was a Black Sapphire/CF/Black Full arriving on the boat in 6 days, I claimed it. It wasn't until I got to the dealer and tried out the sound system that I noticed a huge difference in sound quality. The sound was incredible, and that's when the salesman informed me of this NEW option. At the time, I didn't even see it on the BMW website where you can build your car based on the options. What a wonderful surprise to have stumbled into such superior technology!

I still listen at nominal levels, as I'm still trying to master the SMG, and prefer to hear that I am nut lugging it (because I forgot to downshift), or am not revving it (because I'm rocking out and can't hear the high RPM's).

Don't worry enjoy the music, SMG does not allow engine abuse. Try it, it will down or upshift if it needs.

It will downshift, but it WILL NOT upshift.
