I have one possible expanation on that fenomena.
Lets say we have a car that is very quick out from the box, like a 4WD, and it grabbes it's 1 second advantage in the first few meters directly from the start, compared to a 1 second slower RWD car.
If we now let these two cars start beside each others in an rolling start from say 30 MPH. The 4WD suddenly have lost it's advantage of 1 second when it can't use it's amazing kangoroo starts. So with a rolling start you shouldn't be too suprised if the slower RWD car hit the finnish line first.
In fact, it can even be with a lover trap speed than the chasing 4WD, because if the RWD car is quicker in the early part of the run, it can leave the 4WD behind. And then the 4WD perhaps starts to catch up towards the end of the run, which means that it could reach a higher speed but still not able to reach the other car in distance before the race is over.
This was just a hypothetic example, but oftenly these things happens in real life.
