OKIE DOKIE friends. After a lot of fussing from fellow board members and other online skeptics, I have finally published a full-bore high-speed run of my car. I used a self-made set-up using a Garmin iQue 3600a 12 channel WAAS enabled GPS receiver and two video cameras. There seems to be a bit of speculation about how fast an S85 equipped car can plow through the ozone. While my car hit its limiter at 8250 engine RPM and 340 kph/211 mph indicated, the GPS showed a little slower—A LITTLE SLOWER.
The weather was perfect. No wind and since I did the run on the same road in both directions, there can be little doubt that this car IS FAST. I will switch to 20 inch tires and try and raise the rev limiter. If so, I might be able to crack the 210 mph mark which is impressive for a car that cost me less than 100K USD.
I hope you enjoy the video. You can view a high-resolution version soon. I’ll post the link here.
Very nice Russ. Softball-sized cajones
When you hit 332, did the car bounce off the rev-limiter and decelerate? Seems like it could have creeped a km/h or two more???
Makes me want to go take out the beast and do some high-speed runs....oh wait, I live in the US with its crappy roads and 6 points looming over my license. Will just have to live vicariously thru you:applause:
My foot was planted to the kick-down. I was given her all she got!
I really think if I could raise the rev limiter by 250 rpm and another inch on my wheels, I could bump it up a couple...
Bonehead, if you get your car de-limited, I don't think there is much than can keep up with you. I am also a helicopter pilot and there isn't one out there that can keep up with a car going over 200 mph. Just be sure you have a full tank of gas and you shouldn't have a problem...
Russ, I also replied on the e39 forum. Just wanted to say thanks again for the effort to put this professional quality video together (and posting on both forums). It was a highly enjoyable watch and I've added the link to my 'favorite vids' library for re-viewing. I travel to Germany pretty regularly on business, but I don't enjoy the full potential of the autobahn system, so I'll live vicariously through this.
Seeing the video at 332 makes 240 seem slow. Ah, if only we could experience such things legally on this side of the pond.
Congrats again. In the words of Tiff Needle - "What a car!"
PS. Is there an advantage to having DSC off for such runs? I would have thought that you would want it on in the event that some fool did something unexpected in your path?
Outstanding video!! I for one, appreciate the time you took to create this video and post it for all of us to see.
You have much more faith in the drivers in Germany than I have here in the US, I would be very uncomfortable driving 200mph and passing cars in the the #2 lane with that much speed differential.

Thanks everyone!

Notice how the drivers of slower cars actually move out of my way without me having to make a fuss. Germans know how to drive. They spend a lot of money to get licensed and know the rules.
I am EXTREMELY relaxed while driving here in Germany. People don't tend to "come from nowhere" like they do in the states. Nearly all drivers use their turn-signals here and opposed to the states, if you use your turn signal, most drivers are curteous enough to let you in and not race to cut you off. It really wasn't all that big of a deal to drive that fast with an open road like that.
You seem to be a ghost rider. Watch the vid @ 50 secs down the row and you will see one car vanish into thin air while another one appears out of nowhere. Nice touch but how did you do that?
That was excellent. Not only the car and driving that performed flawlessly (VERY HIGH confirmed top speed, at last) but also the editing, documentation and finallyl also the mention of m5board.com and m6board.com: I and also on behalf of the community thank you very much!
Russ, thanks for the vid. I had a smile on my face everytime the GPS crossed 250km all the way passed 330. My gf walked in and saw this silly look on my face while I was staring at my monitor. She probably thought I was getting off on some weird fetish web site ( well, it kinda is... :M5thumbs: )
I used approximately one-half tank of fuel. Fortunately I pay only about .95 US Cents per liter here in Germany.
When I brought the car home from Kelleners, I had an RS6 and a 911 play with me for a while. Neither one of them ever overtook me, but the 911 was keeping up until about 170 mph when he disapeared in my mirror. I only hit 180mph that day--nothing like yesterday, but then again the traffic was heavier too.
Thanks. I am using a Garmin iQue 3600a. In my opinion, Garmin makes the best GPS receivers out there. Accurate and fast signal locks. My GPS had WAAS enabled which makes it much more accurate as long as there are differential ground stations located in the area. I was close enought to Frankfurt International to get a good differential position (accurate enough for airliners carrying hundreds of people to perform approaches in heavy weather). The Garmin iQue3600a is an aviation/automotive handheld.
I use Sony Vegas ver 7.0e. I also have some .pdf's that explain some PIP editing techniques that I used in this video. Send me a PM and I can hook you up if you're interested.
The GPS camera was mounted in that foam. I cut out a section of foam for the camera to fit. The foam bed was placed on the floor of the passenger foot well.
Very nice video Russ! I got lucky enough to hit 152 mph here in Atlanta going down I75. Though, I had to slow down because some douchebag in the left lane was doing the speed limit... I mean seriously, who does the speed limit in the left lane...
