E60 Diff / mechincal whine?

While taking my newly purchased yet to be delivered e60 m5 (17,000kms) for a test drive I noticed a slight diff / gearbox whine on very light load / lift off at about 80km/h (50mph).

The dealer had one of their mechanics take the car for a run and acknowledged there was a whine. I negotiated to have that fixed before I took delivery. Then I flew home (600 miles from dealership) and am to take delivery next week (they are trucking the car to my local dealer).

I spoke to the salesman yesterday to check on progress and he told me they had fixed the whine by adding an additive to the oil. I questioned the validity of that as a fix and he said it was a known issue and that was the resolution as issued by BMW.

I suppose I am ok with it if the whine is gone and stays gone but it does seem a bit questionable.

Has anyone else had this whine? Is anyone aware if this is in fact a known issue and that an oil additive is the fix?

Of course I am sceptical the selling dealer might just want the problem to "go away". Thoughts?

Regards,
SGE60

Sounds a bit like the Dinan differential whine...?

The car would have the OEM diff I believe. I'd be 99.9% sure in fact.

Of course. But the same type of issues would seem to apply.

Changing viscosity, that's all. Works every time, even in lawn tractors. They all do whine a bit, evey one I've owned, even my new 08. The 07 6 speed was the worst bot that was more clutch/flywheel related.

Some background information in this thread:
Creaking sound from rear diff - recall issued & fixed under warranty

How many types of differential oil are there?
83-22-2-282-583 is the special oil (Dinan specifies this oil).
There must also be a "non-special" oil.
Is there also a "break-in" oil? (to be changed at the 1200 mile service)
Other than higher cost, is there any reason to not use the special oil?

Two different problems, same solution. The whine is at speed in a straight line, the grinding noise is slow speed turning.

Not a problem, just the nature of the "beast". (sorry) Different oil is the fix.
