I'm removing my decklid spoiler today

Its a beautifull afternoon, I've decided to get an ACS deckilid spoiler so I'm taking on my lastest DIY project. Leaving the car out in the sun the surface is heating up nicely. Next dental floss. Waxed (not minted or cinamon flavor). Its going OK, but I keep on breaking it. I'm halfway through and if I wedge something under one end it gives it a little upward pressure and makes flossing a little easier.

Now I see that underneath there's a strip of adhesive. How do I get that off?? Acetone? Grip solvent (golf analogy)? You guys have any advice or should I just wait and have a body shop do it?

Perform a search on the E39 M5 forum - they've got experience with removing the BMW adhesive. It's also used for the emblems.

Personally, with the "fluid they pass on as paint" thats been applied to BMW these days, I'd get a rubber disc that attaches to a drill in order to rub off the residu of the adhesive material.

Using anything strong enough to wipe it off compromises the paint aswell, and that might be even worse if you or the next owner decides to take the ACS spoiler off again.

The dental floss that wont break is the one made by Gore....it's called Glide it's indestructable, and I own shares of GORE, ....so thanks..

I use Gumout carb cleaner, gently to remove Gum....works good.

Goof Off should do wonders. Also, are citrus cleaners like Goo B Gone safe on paint? They remove adhesives without any issue...just let it soak in and then it's very easy to remove it from there.

I'm thinking about doing this same mod so I look forward to hearing about your experience and seeing pics of the result.

Ok, success! Used your basic non-industrial strenght floss but wraped it around two penicils to use as handles. Broke frequently but a little patience and got it off no prob. Next, it appeared to be fixed on with strips of adhesive. Removed the bulk of it by hand or gentle scraping with a plastic credit card. Lastly the sticky stuff. Goo-Gone works but its slow. Then tried a little Murphy's oil soap on top then more Goo-gone which worked faster. Finally, Duh!!!, just look in you garage stupid! Maguires makes a paint cleaning product thats safe on clear coat. Worked best!
Not a bad look. Will drive around with it like this for a bit.
