The M5 was 6 speed manual in the comparison. DSC could not be disabled, hence the third place.
MotorTrend did the same comparison (M5 with SMG) and the results were :
1. Audi
2. BMW
3. Mercedes

Truth is all 3 cars are very good cars and 3 different test teams will probably pick 3 different winners?!

The guys who did the tests seems to know a thing or two about cars (unlike many other "car journalists") and have had the opportunity to test the M5 in several occasions it seems....

Each to his own.....I wouldnt mind any of the 3 cars but I could choose and my choice was the M5....with smg...

Since I made a $100K+++ investment, my choice is clear. Duh. But:

I DID look at Mercedes and Audi, and the rejuvinated (?) Cadillac. I am very style and reputation sensitive.....its the type of stuff that makes us all different from each other, right? So......these were the style and reputations I apply to these cars, fairly or not. Again, IMO:

Cadillac: My Father's Car. Its no Mercedes.

Mercedes: My Father's car when he had money.

Audi: Identity crisis (who am I?)

To me, I can identify with BMW engineering, style, reputation, and the simple fact that I have owned a few, and people swoon over them to a degree that I have not seen with others makes that my friends own.

Fickle? Totally. Fickle and happy here in my bubble.

I would agree with you Tom.
And I would add that if you read any comparison articles, BMW typically is the benchmark..."handles as good as a BMW; this car might be better than the BMW; etc."
I have yet to see any article that refers to MB, Cadillac, or Audi in that manner.

being the benchmark doesn't mean much when those articles start reading, "surpasses the bmw".
