Well that didn't take long... (failed radio)

Have had the car for 2 days - all going well, until this morning - the stereo is dead. Or rather, there is no sound. iDrive working normally, radio and iPod functioning normally (station IDs, track names) but no sound. (I notice that although I can select tracks on the iPod, they do not appear to be actually playing (I get "-.--" instead of elapsed play time)). AM, FM, iPod, Sat - all produce no sound. Also, the voice control system is not working. But, I am getting voice instructions from the Nav.

I have toggled the mute on and off, recycled the engine several times - to no avail.

2 strange things: When I shut down and even lock the car, the radio etc remain on. Scheisse. I have not read about anything like this on this board - anyone seen this?

A bit like the old DSP issues on the E39.

Try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes then reconnecting. This will reboot everything.

Ok - any consequences to this? Radio codes or anything like that? Not happy about having to do this on my third day with the car...

unfortunately, you may have to get used to these type of annoyances. this car has a lot of tech in it. I'm fairly certain this will not be your last issue. 16 months into my 2 year lease I've had more than a few tech issue with my car. That's not including the Vanos line and the recent SMG issues. Good luck.

You can also try resetting the i-drive by pressing both eject buttons AND the volume button (all on the M-ASK) at the same time.
Disconnecting the battery should do the same thing and better, but be aware that it will trigger your alarm and the GPS tracking system (if you have it) will trigger. In that case you need to ring the tracker company first.
If all of this doesn't work you for sure need to go back to your dealer.

Thanks - car is going in...

Thanks for the responses. I am relcutant to disconnect the battery in my third day of ownership. I called my SA and he tells me it is likely a problem with the MOST Bus and that I need to bring it back in. This suks...:sad3:

The radio problem cropped up because you shut the car off while the wipers and radio were on...at the same time...bad move.

To repair, you must remove the wiper motor place in oven and heat to 350 degrees for 30 min....let cool place back in car...the next thing you must do is turn radio to the weather channel, with it on, get out of your car and do a rain dance while circling the car 3 times clockwise and 4 times counterclock wise.....

well, after that, if it doesn't work...take it back to dealer.....sorry

Now its working...

No surprises, but when I got in my tonight after work, I got in and drove about 20 yards before thinking: where is that music coming from? Stereo working perfectly again. I was almost disappointed - almost. I hate intermittent faults, but I guess I'll just hope it was a once off...:dunno:

My dad's old 740IL had the same issue, it had something to do with the connection part (forget the name of the piece). But it was replaced and worked fine again.

Keep in mind, if you have comfort access, you have to hit the start/stop button twice (witout your foot on the brake -- at least the second time). Hitting it once leaves the Radio Mode on.

You can avoid hitting the button twice by leaving the car in 1st gear, foot on brake, hold the stop button for two seconds...

Yes, I have CA and I know about shutting down the accesories. But I locked the car and came back an hour later and it was still on. And, Kees, my car has v.24 so I don't think that was the problem. But, since the problem fixed itself yesterday it is still working so fingers crossed... Thanks for the help as always though.
