Just installed Supersprint race mufflers

After I rode my in brother-in-law's E55 AMG over the holidays, I was reminded of how little exhaust note the M5 has (or at least to the extent you can hear inside the car). The E55 has a nice low rumble that's not at all intrusive, but it sounds powerful. I wanted the same for my M5.

The SS race mufflers did the trick. It's not at all loud, especially at idle, but you can finally hear the exhaust. The way I look at it, it's a good complement to the wonderful induction noises we have coming from the front of the car.

I like the race tips better than stock, too. They're 80mm in diameter, with straight (not rolled) tailpipes, so it looks more like the E39 M5 exhaust. The diameter is just right for the car IMHO.

Installation was simple, around an hour. An easy one beer job.

Here are some lousy pics I took while in the dark. Notice how much space is left in the cavity previously occupied by the stock mufflers. The Supersprint setup probably saves ~50 lbs altogether, so I can legitimately claim my car weighs less than two tons!

Looks great!

I want to get the exhaust changed on my IB 07 M5 6 speed , but I am not sure about the warranty, I was told by the dealer that the Dinan Exhaust does not void the warranty, do you know if Supersprint is "accepted" by BMW NA??

Ha! No modifications (i.e., non-OE parts) are acceptable by BMW NA. Specifically, per Dinan, "The installation of Dinan Performance Products and systems may affect the vehicle manufacturer’s new car limited warranty."

You should read the fine print about Dinan warranty coverage. Dinan parts are not guaranteed by BMW NA or your BMW dealer, unless perhaps your BMW dealer is also a Dinan dealer. There is perhaps a handshake agreement between the two companies, but I doubt even that. Rather, Dinan offers a supplemental warranty that matches the BMW NA "factory" warranty.

See this: http://www.dinancars.com/Warranty.asp

Also, look into the Magnussen-Moss act, which basically prohibits a warrantor (BMW NA) from denying coverage on the basis of a third party modification UNLESS they can prove the modification caused the failure. In short, there's no such thing as a universal "warranty void" because you have modified your car: BMW has to prove that your modifications caused a failure before they can legally void your warranty coverage.

More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnussen-Moss_Act

But don't take my word for it. Look into it for yourself. And don't be surprised if you have some headaches when you show up at your dealer asking for service on your heavily modified car, even if you are legally entitled to that service.

In my experience, however, light modifications are not a problem for dealers. For example, my M3 has an aftermarket big brake kit, and the dealer still checks the pad thickness during service visits. My M3 also has the European exhaust and aftermarket suspension, and not once has the dealer given me any grief about servicing it.

My feeling is that a muffler is one of the most innocuous modifications you can make, and it's extremely unlikely that you would ever be denied warranty coverage because of it...but YMMV.

Agreed. I would not worry about warranty issues stemming from a mainstream exhaust installation.

Enjoy the Supersprint Race. Based on what you wanted, you chose the perfect one.

The upper-RPM range seems mostly unchanged to me. It's a little louder but the tone doesn't seem that different, at least from the driver's seat.

Here's a good video of an M5 with Supersprint race mufflers, including several high-RPM drivebys:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...m5+e60+exhaust

This is one of the videos that sold me on the exhaust, because I prefer the smooth "wail" to the more throaty and raspy sound of the Eisenmann.

Thanks for the link jmayzurk I wonder what it'll sound like if the secondary cat is bypassed
