        6-speed gearbox source...

        There was some discussion earlier about the source for the 6-speed gearbox in the E60 M5 - be it an E39 M5 gearbox or something else.

        According to the latest Auto, Motor und Sport it's a modified 550i unit.

        AMS also confirm the manual is US-market only.

        If its a modded 550, I would hope they shortened the throws, and eliminated the 'dead space' at the bottom of the clutch pedal travel.

        I'm no expert, but I did get to drive the 6 speed yesterday. After two weeks with the SMG, the 6-speed seemed and felt a little cruder than I remember of the E39 stick. I noticed the dead space at the bottom of the clutch pedal you refer to, and I did not notice anything nifty regarding the throws.
